We ’ll support you, Akogun assures UNILORIN UCJ

The Director of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin, Mr Kunle Akogun, has assured the University’s Chapter of the Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ) of the continuous and all-round support of his Directorate.

Mr Akogun gave this assurance while receiving the leadership of the UCJ, which paid him a courtesy visit in his office recently.

The Director, who was represented by the Deputy Editor of UNILORIN BULLETIN, Mr Abubakar Imam, said that the Directorate was established to promote and preserve the alluring image of the University of Ilorin and all its segments, including students.

The veteran journalist, who expressed profound delight with the interest of the increasing number of students of the University in journalism, said that he was not surprised that many of the members of the UCJ are not pursuing journalism- related courses.

Mr Akogun explained that journalism is an exciting field and that anyone who showed passion for the profession can excel as a journalist as exemplified in the careers of many outstanding journalists who earned their academic qualifications from other fields of studies before veering into journalism.

Speaking on the request of the UCJ for training opportunities, Mr Akogun said that one of the cardinal reasons for the establishment of both UNILORIN BULLETIN and the UNILORIN 89.3 FM is to help in providing practical exposure to students of the University in print and broadcast journalism.

The Director, who encouraged members of the UCJ to focus more attention on their studies, said that his Directorate, particularly the University’s official radio station, has trained many students of the University who are now serving as successful broadcasters and seasoned journalists across and beyond the nation.

Mr Akogun specifically charged members of the UCJ and the generality of students of the University to always be of good behaviour anywhere they find themselves.

He reminded them of the fact that they are ambassadors of the University and that the institution would always be assessed by others based on the attributes displayed by its students whether within or outside its campus.

Speaking earlier, the President of the UNILORIN UCJ, Mr Emmanuel Ife-Oluwa Ajao, said that the visit was to seek the cooperation of the Directorate of Corporate Affairs in the training and retraining of its members.

The UNILORIN UCJ President, who is a student of the Department of Animal Production, thanked Mr Akogun for all the previous support the Directorate had offered the UCJ in the past and said that more of such would be appreciated.

He assured the Director and the University management that members of the UCJ would continue to be of good conduct wherever they find themselves.

Other members of the UCJ delegation included Miss Grace Omoniyi, Miss Boluwatife  Oladele, Mr Olawale Isreal and Miss Asmau Soliu.
