We all need Mathematics – Egbewole

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has reiterated the importance of  Mathematics in human life, saying that it is essential in solving daily problems.

Prof. Egbewole made this remark last Tuesday (December 12,2023) while speaking at  the golden anniversary celebration and presentation of awards organised by the Mathematical Association of Nigerian, Kwara State Branch, held at the University Main Auditorium.

The Vice Chancellor, who was represented at the event by the Dean, Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Ilorin, Prof. Baba Abdullahi Alafara,  explained that the  theme, “Mathematics and Technology: How They Have Shaped Each Other”, was topical, apt and timely.

The Professor of Jurisprudence and International Law applauded the KWSMAN’s tireless commitment to research that would culminate in cutting edge techniques and innovations in the field of Mathematics, saying that the efforts are both commendable and inspiring.

The Vice Chancellor also reiterated the need for the Association to prioritise the provision of students with state-of-the-art tools that would  stimulate creativity and innovation.

Prof. Egbewole added that he was particularly excited by meeting with other distinguished honorees at the event, stressing that he  anticipated a rigorous exchange of ideas and strategies that would lead to tackling the challenges faced in the field of Mathematics that would be of benefit to students and other stakeholders.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria, Kwara State Branch, Prof. Kamilu Rauf, expressed the Association’s excitement at hosting dignitaries from far and near.

In his lecture, the Guest Speaker, Prof Emmanuel O. Oghre of the University of Benin, analysed the role of Mathematics and technology in addressing global challenges

Prof. Oghre explained that Mathematics is poised to take the center stage in issues bothering on climate change, health care and sustainable development, which required interdisciplinary solutions.

Highlights of the event included presentation of awards to eminent Nigerians in recognition and appreciation of their immense contributions to the growth of the Association.

Those honoured included the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN;  the Vice Chancellor of the Muhammad Kamalud-Deen University, Ilorin, Prof. Rasheed Gbenga Jimoh; and a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics, University of Ilorin, who is also the Balogun Alanamu of Ilorin, Dr Abubakar Atolagbe Akanbi-Jos, among others.
