UNILORIN shines at WAUG Championship

Team UNILORIN proved its athletic prowess at the 2023 West African Universities Games (WAUG) as it secured two gold, four silver, and one bronze medals to rank a commendable 8th place out of 22 participating universities at the just- concluded 15th edition of this continental sports event held between December 15 and December 22, 2023 at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife,Osun State.

While the University of Ghana emerged victorious, Team UNILORIN athletes left their marks in athletics, basketball (female), and table tennis, showcasing their dedication and talent.

Miss Ruqqayah Mustapha dominated the Discus Throw as she brought home a well-deserved gold.

Miss Mustapha also secured a silver in the women’s Shot Put,which demonstrated her versatility.

Mr Alaba Ilaboya, a double threat, claimed gold in the men’s Shot Put and silver in both Javelin and Discus events.

Beyond individual brilliance, the women’s Basketball team bagged a bronze in the 3-on-3 category, highlighting UNILORIN’s teamwork and strategic play.

This impressive performance continued UNILORIN’s strong legacy in WAUG. In 2012, the University proudly hosted the games, showcasing its commitment to promoting sportsmanship and athletic excellence throughout West Africa.

The University of Ghana  emerged as the overall champion.  Notably, the University of Education, Ghana, claimed the second spot with an impressive tally of six gold, four silver, and four bronze medals, while Benson Idahosa University, Edo, secured the third position with six gold, two  silver, and two bronze medals.

The UNILORIN contingents have returned home not only with medals but also with the pride of representing their University and inspiring future generations of student-athletes.
