UNILORIN Medical Officer shines at genetic training

In a remarkable feat of academic excellence, a Principal Medical Officer at UNILORIN Health Services, Dr Nathaniel Akintomiwa Akintunde, has emerged as the overall best participant of the 20th Genetic Counselling Training Course on Sickle Cell Disorders, which took place at the Sickle Cell Centre, Lagos on Friday, November 24, 2023.

Dr. Akintunde’s stellar performance was recognised and celebrated at the ceremony where he stood out among a diverse group of participants form across the country, including professionals like Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, Medical Laboratory Scientists, and a participant from Tanzania.

In an interaction with UNILORIN BULLETIN penultimate Wednesday (December 13, 2023) at the Registrar’s Office, Dr  Akintunde, who is also  an alumnus of the University, expressed his readiness for continued advocacy on sickle cell.

 He disclosed that his vision is to alleviate the burden of Sickle Cell in Nigeria and enhance the quality of life for individuals battling this condition.

Driven by his commitment, Dr Akintunde said he is spearheading the Bethesda Sickle Cell Initiative (BSCI), a non-governmental organisation aimed at creating awareness and fostering positive changes in the sickle cell landscape.

As a sickle cell advocate, Dr Akintunde expressed his commitment to reducing the burden of Sickle Cell in Nigeria, which he planned to achieve through regular awareness campaigns in secondary schools, universities, and other tertiary institutions.

He added that he will continue to promote premarital genotype screening and educating communities about Sickle Cell disorders.

Dr  Akintunde also assured that he would persist in his advocacy efforts by  extending awareness campaigns to various educational institutions.

 He added that his goal is to empower individuals with knowledge about sickle cell disorders and ultimately contribute to a healthier and more informed society.

Dr Akintunde thanked the University management for the support extended to him and assured that he would continue to make a positive impact in the field of sickle cell advocacy.
