Take UNILORIN along with you, Yusuf tells TP students

The Director of the Institute of Education, University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulRaheem Yusuf, has charged the sandwich students of the University, who have been dispatched to various schools on teaching practice, to carry the pride of the University with them to their various institutions.

Prof. Yusuf made this call penultimate Saturday (January 13, 2024) while addressing the concerned students at the orientation programme held for them at the Mini Campus of the University.

The Director, who encouraged the students to be inventors, advocates of good values and inspirational to those they would be teaching, also urged them to contribute to the revolutionalisation of the  teaching profession.

He explained that the Institute aligned with the vision of the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, as encapsulated in the 1:10:500 initiative, which is aimed at making the University the first in Nigeria,  among the best 10 in Africa and one of the best 500 in the world.

Prof. Yusuf added that students of the University have significant roles to play in the realisation of the vision.

He explained that teaching is not just a profession but a calling, a responsibility and a privilege.

The Director ,who is also a former Provost of the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, maintained that as ambassadors of the University, the students must carry the torch of  knowledge through their teaching practices as they are also expected to contribute directly to the realisation of the ambitious vision of the University.

He urged the students not to be just teachers but transformative educators who embrace innovation, adaptability and inclusivity in their approach as their excellent passion for teaching and commitment to student development will be the building blocks for brighter educational future.

Also speaking, the Chairmam of the Teaching Practice Committee, Dr Eniola K. Ola-Alani, admonished the concerned students to be focused in the discharge of their responsibilities.

She explained that teachers are nation builders and should always behave like one wherever they find themselves.

Dr Ola-Alani explained that the University frowned at illegal activities and encouraged the  students to desist from such acts. 

On his part, the Chairman of the University of Ilorin’s Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Alex Akanmu, enlightened the participants on the benefits of the teaching practice.

Dr Akanmu, who teaches at the Department of Science Education, urged the students to take proper advantage of the teaching practice to develop themselves and make new friends.

The duo of Mrs Fasilat Giwa and Dr Abubakar Lawal spoke on effective classroom management as they advised the participants to demonstrate professionalism by ensuring good classroom control ability.

Responding on behalf of his colleagues, Mr Isiaq Olaitan, who is a student of the Department of Educational Technology,explained that the orientation programme is an eye opener and an avenue for the students to know the rules and regulations guiding teaching practice.

The event was graced by several dignitaries including Dr Mohammad AbdulRahman, Dr Dorcas Daramola, Dr Musa Suleiman, Dr Moshood Oniye, Dr Ibraheem Kperogi and Mr Adewale Adeoye, among others.
