Sulyman Alabi, born 56 years ago is a clinician, medical educator, researcher and health administrator with nearly 30 years’ experience with competencies cutting across diverse interests in Ear Nose and throat, head and neck surgery; Cancer care and biomedical research with health and University administration.

A graduate of Medicine from University of Ilorin, Nigeria with MBBS degree in June 1991and  an advanced medical degree in Ear Nose and throat Surgery with special focus in head and neck surgery from the Lagos University teaching hospital, Lagos, Nigeria with fellowships of both the West African and National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in 2002.

He acquired the Doctor of Medicine (MD, 2020) from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He has won national and international awards related to his academic outputs.

He served as the Director of clinical affairs and training / CMAC (Deputy Chief medical Director) at the University of Ilorin teaching hospital between 2011 and 2015 which entailed direct supervision of the clinical activities and training at the over 600 bedded hospital.

Academically, he is a Professor of ENT Surgery at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria since 2014, with general ENT and head and neck surgery as his main areas of research focus. His specific contributions are ENT care, Snoring, hearing conservation and advanced head and neck surgical reconstruction, mentorships assessors for several Universities on career elevations and certified National Universities Commission of Nigeria accreditor to several Universities in Nigeria since 2014.

Through his position as Director of the University of Ilorin research development and In house training (2016-2019), he was won and facilitated several research grants, into Millions of Naira from Nigerian Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), NIH and other NGOs. He has been a member of the TETFUND Technical Advisory Group since 2019.

He has also coordinated in house training for both academic and non-academic members of the University community with mentoring of sister Nigerian Universities such as Covenant, Baze, Federal Universities in Lokoja, Kashere among others(2016-2019) and only recently served as the main facilitator for a Grantsmanship workshop at University of Abuja(August 2021) and Borno State University, Maiduguri, Nigeria(2022). Currently the PI for Study of Cardiovascular Research Training (SCaRT) an NIH Grant 2019-2024 between New York University School of Medicine, University of Ghana and Ilorin. Nigeria

Alabi has facilitated and established the UITH Ilorin head and neck dissection course since 2009 in collaborations with St Georges University of London, United Kingdom and Erasmus University teaching hospital, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The programme has been accredited by the West African College of Surgeons for postgraduate medical training and has been able to perform high tech head and neck cancer surgeries, thereby stemming medical tourism and opened windows of opportunities for outstanding residents who had embarked on fellowship training in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and South Africa

Alabi has over 80 research publications in peer review journals and chapters in books with a citation index on Google Scholar of more than 600 times. Alabi is a resource person at the postgraduate medical colleges and serves as an examiner, involved in the Part I and Part II fellowship examinations since 2007. Some of his publications have contributed to multidisciplinary team approach in head and neck cancer management in Nigeria and beyond. He has mentored over 30 candidates in obtaining advanced degrees including Fellowships.

He is equally actively involved in cancer care and advocacy following requisite formal training in reputable cancer centres of MD Anderson Cancer research Centre, University of Texas in Houston, USA; Royal Marsden hospital, London and Erasmus University hospital, Rotterdam the Netherlands among others.

He became the faculty Secretary of the Faculty of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (ORLHNS) of the faculty of ORLHNS at the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in January, 2023. Also a faculty board member of faculty of Otorhinolaryngology, West African College of Surgeons from 2019 to 2023

He was unanimously elected as the 7th Provost of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin.Ilorin.Nigeria on a four year mandate with an effective date of August 1st, 2022. He is happily married with children.
