POGSASS organises orientation programme for new PG students
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has said that students and alumni of the University are always positively unique anywhere they find themselves.
Prof. Egbewole stated this at the orientation programme organised by the Postgraduate Students Association of the University for its new members at the University Main Auditorium.
The Vice Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services) of the University, Prof. Suleiman Funsho Ambali, advised the new postgraduate students of the University to always be of good conduct within and outside the campus of the institution.
Prof. Egbewole explained that it is very important for the students to be mindful of the impacts of their conducts on the alluring reputation of the University.
He added that their conducts whether within or outside the shores of the University will leave far beyond their expectations and they must therefore be careful at all times as they have become the ambassadors of the University.
Speaking on the quality of the services and materials available at the University, the Vice Chancellor assured them that they are in the right place for their post graduate degree programmes and that the quality of services they would be exposed to by the University can never be gotten elsewhere.
Prof. Egbewole added that they would be trained at the University in such a way that they would not only be useful to themselves and their communities but also to the nation and the entire humanity.
He assured them that they would be groomed to become excellent scholars and fascinating managers of human and material resources anywhere they would find themselves.
Also speaking, the Sub-Dean of the Postgraduate School, Dr Lukman Abdulrauf, urged the students to be disciplined, focused and avoid plagiarism during and after their various programmes at the University.
He also advised them on the need to cultivate a very good relationship with their supervisors and among themselves for them to have peaceful and rewarding sojourn at the University and for the sake of the future.
The Sub-Dean assured them of the readiness of the staff of the Postgraduate School and those of the other various segments of the University to assist them in anyway possible for them to have a stress-free academic training at the University.
In his address, the Ag. Bursar of the University, Mr Oba Abdulbarki encouraged them to cultivate the habit of visiting the COMSIT Unit whenever they have any problem with any of their charges.
Mr Abdulbarki, who was represented by Mr Gbadeyan, also warned them against falling prey to fraudsters who may approach them for one reason or the other with the intention of defrauding them of their hard earned resources.
The University’s Chief Security Officer, Mr Wasiu Oyewo also assured them of the safety of their lives and property within the campus of the University.
Mr Oyewo, who was represented by Mr Ibrahim Zuberu of the Security Division, gave out various security tips as he urged them to be careful in their interactions with those they neither know nor have any business with.
He, thereafter, gave out phone numbers of some members of staff of the Security Division they can contact in case of any emergency.
Also speaking, the Kwara State Commissioner for Education, Hajia Saidat Modibbo Kawu, who was represented by Mr Taiye Odedeji, encouraged the students to always be of good character and to prove to the world that University of Ilorin is the best place to do post graduate programme.
The Senator representing Kwara North in the National Assembly, Senator Sadiq Suleiman Umar, congratulated the University of Ilorin for its giant strides over the years.
Senator Sadiq, who was represented by Mr Hassan Yahyah Bagudu, also commended the Postgraduate Students Association of the University of Ilorin for putting up such a befitting event.
He advised new members of the Association to inculcate all they have been taught for them to have a rewarding academic career at the University and for them to excel in their various careers after the completion of their programmes at the University.
The Special Assistant to the Governor of Kwara State on Digital Innovation, Mr Kayode Ishola, also congratulated the newly admitted Postgraduate students on their admissions as he reminded them of the inevitability of modern communication technology in the discharge of their academic engagements while his counterpart on Drug Abuse, Mr Olamilekan Mikail, charged them to stay away from drug abuse so that they can be useful to themselves and the society.
The lawmaker later gave six members of the Association a grant totalling N 1.1million in two categories of M. Sc. and Ph. D levels to enable the beneficiaries successfully conduct their research works.
From the M.Sc. category, Miss Aisha Alao won N200,000, with Mr Jimoh Abdulrafiu getting N150,000 while Mr Mohammed Nda Bobo was given N100,000.
At the PhD level, Mr Jimoh Lukman was given N300, 000 as Mr Ogunbiyi Taiyelolu Temitope won N200, 000 while Mr Akanbi Shola Ahmed got N150,000.
In addition, Ambassador Tajudeen Olesin also gave out the sum of N100, 000:00 to three Ph.D candidates to be shared among the trio. The winner of the first position N50, 000, second position N30,000 and the 3rd position N20, 000, respectively.
