Know Your New DVC (RTI), Prof. Fawole
Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole; a distinguished medical practitioner, thorough-bred academic and outstanding administrator, is the new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), University of Ilorin. Prof.Fawole, who is a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, succeeds another remarkable medical practitioner and scholar, Prof. Mikhail O. Buhari, who held the position during the administration of the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem.
The new Deputy Vice Chancellor was born on June 5,1961 in Iwo, Osun State. He attended the famous Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos, between 1973 and 1978 from where he bagged his West African School Certificate (WASC) with flying colours.
In 1978, Prof. Fawole was admitted into the University of Ilorin from where he earned his MB;BS degree in 1984. He received further academic and professional training at the West African Postgraduate Medical College at the end of which he became a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1994. He was also awarded the Fellowship of the International College of Surgeons (FIS) in 2004.
Prof. Fawole commenced his brilliant career as a House Officer at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital(UITH), Ilorin, from 1984 to 1985. He also served as a Medical Officer as a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Akure, Ondo State between 1985 and 1986.
This exemplary academic became a Resident Doctor at the UITH, Ilorin, in 1986. He served as such for eight years at the Hospital.
Having acquired tremendous professional exposure coupled with his desire to teach, Prof. Fawole joined the services of the University of Ilorin as a Lecturer 1 in 1994.
He was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2004.He has been simultaneously serving as a Consultant at the UITH since 1994.
Following his consistent academic industry and professional efficiency characterised by exciting contributions in the realms of teaching, research and community service, the new Deputy Vice Chancellor was elevated to the rank of Reader in 2011. He was eventually promoted to the exalted rank of Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology by the authorities of the University of Ilorin in 2014.
Aside from teaching, Prof. Fawole has held some very important administrative positions in the services of the University of Ilorin and the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. He was a member, Ethical and Research Committee between 1996 and 2008. He also served as a member of the Faculty Admissions Committee from 1996 to 1998.
Prof. Fawole also served as Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology between 2006 and 2008. He was also a member of the Curriculum Committee from 2008 to 2010.
The new Deputy Vice Chancellor was also a member of the Appointments and Promotions Committee between 2019 and 2022. He was also a Senate representative on the Governing Council of the University of Ilorin from 2024 to 2022. He also served as the Chairman of the Ceremonial Committee from 2022 till his new appointment.
Outside the academic, Prof. Fawole contributions were also remarkable. He was the General Secretary and later Vice Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria from 1997 to 1999 and between 1999 and 2001, respectively. He also served as the Chairman, Kwara Sector, International Association for the Study of Pain in 2010.
Prof. Fawole has also served as an Examiner in the Postgraduate Examinations of the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) since 2008. He has also been a team member of the accreditation team of the West African College of Surgeons to various centres right from 2009. Between 2009 and 2013, the new Deputy Vice Chancellor served as a Member of Board, Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, West African College of Surgeons. He eventually served as a Member of Council, West African College of Surgeons between 2021 and 2023.
Right from the date he joined the services of the University, Prof. Fawole has taught various courses in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to 500 Level students. Between 2007 and 2024, he also handled Obstetrics-related courses in Pharmacology and Pharmatherapeutics to 400 students from 2007 till date.
Prof. Fawole is a member of several professional bodies. These include the National Cancer Society of Nigeria, the Gynaecological Oncology Society of Nigeria, the Society of Gynaecologic Oncology and the International Association for the Study of Pain.
This highly distinguished medical scholar has attended several workshops and trainings locally and abroad. He also has over 60 publications to his credit.
Despite his tight engagements as a medical practitioner, academic and administrator, Prof. Fawole has also been well involved in community development activities. He is a member of Neighbourhood Vigilante Committee Security Committee at Chapel of Redemption (COR), Gaa-Akanbi, Ilorin . He was also the Chairman, Medical Volunteer team,Chapel of Redemption, Gaa Akanbi, Ilorin, among several others.
Prof. Fawole, who prior to his emergence as the Deputy Vice Chancellor was the Chairman, Ceremonials Committee, is married to the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ilorin, Prof. Oluyemisi Fawole. The two distinguished academics are blessed with three children who are doing fine.
The new Deputy Vice Chancellor enjoys the reading of novels,games and watching movies as hobbies.
