Drive with care, Garba charges UNILORIN motorists

The Sub-Dean, Student Affairs Division, University of Ilorin, Dr Mohammed Kabir Garba, has enjoined motorists, particularly commercial drivers plying the University routes to always drive with care to ensure the safety of members of the University community.

The Sub-Dean gave this advice recently while speaking with UNILORIN BULLETIN in his office.

Dr Garba said that it is very important for motorists to always have the presence of mind while driving in order to avoid any form of road mishap that could expose innocent members of the University community to danger.

The Sub-Dean said that it is very important for the drivers to be particularly careful with students   whether commuting in their vehicles or not, saying that the existence of the University, which gave them the privilege to operate in the University, is premised on the presence of students.

Dr Garba said that without the students no one would derive any means of livelihood at the University. He, therefore, said, ‘‘every effort must be made towards preserving the lives and health of these young people even when they are propelled by youthful exuberance to act ignorantly or carelessly’’.

He explained that the advice is necessitated by some reports made available to the Student Affairs Division that some of the commercial drivers ignore traffic code and civility while driving, a tendency which he said could cause accidents that could lead to students unrest.

The Statistics scholar  implored motorists not to always insist on their rights of passage, particularly when they observed that their fellow road users are careless.
