Yahaya charges UNILORITES on total devotion to studies

As students of the nation’s most sought-after University, the University of Ilorin, return to the various campuses of the institution to begin the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic session, an appeal has gone to them to face their studies squarely.

This appeal was made last Monday (April 15, 2024) by the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Lasiele Alabi Yahaya, while speaking with UNILORIN BULLETIN in his office.

Prof. Yahaya said that it is important for the students to prioritise learning over any other matter, pointing out that the main purpose of leaving their various homes and loved ones is knowledge and skills acquisition that would equip them against the challenges of the future.

The Dean, who is a former Director of the Institute of Education, said that students need to always make their parents and other relations proud by ensuring that they graduate from the University with enviable class of degree.

Prof. Yahaya said that unlike many years back when the labour market was not saturated, going to school and bagging just a degree is no longer enough but rounding off such degree programmes with good grades or classes of degree.

The Professor of Educational Guidance and Counselling insisted that, notwithstanding the situation of the labour market, those who finish with outstanding academic qualifications and backed by fascinating practical skills would surely have their way either at local or international level.

He charged the students to ensure that their parents and guardians’ consistent financial and emotional investments in them right from their infancy is not wasted through poor performance or engagement in unlawful activities that usually lead to unceremonious termination of their studentship.

Prof. Yahaya, who is also a former Director of the UNILORIN Counselling and Human Development Centre (UCHDC), advised students to distance themselves from every form of antisocial behaviour.

He explained that the University has a very good reputation among its peers and that it is incumbent on every member of the University community to protect and build upon the  reputation.

Realising that all cannot be continuously glittering, Prof. Yahaya encouraged students who may be faced with one emotional challenge or the other to take advantage of the services of the UNILORIN Counselling and Human Development Centre (UCHDC), which, he said, is manned by well trained and experienced professionals for solutions, noting that “a problem shared is almost resolved”.

While appreciating the significance of recreation among students, Prof. Yahaya said that students can also take advantage of various sporting facilities on campus to unwind.
