We will continue to invest in human capital development – Egbewole

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has reaffirmed the determination of his administration to invest in human capital development, which will, in turn, help in actualising its Vision 1:10:500.

Prof. Egbewole stated this last Monday (April 15, 2024) while delivering his welcome address at the Workshop organised by the Chartered Institute of Management and Leadership (CIML) at the Auditorium Basement.

The Vice Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Suleiman Folounsho Ambali, said the administration is doing a lot to ensure that staff of the University participate effectively in different training programmes, workshops and conferences nationally and internationally.

 He also assured the staff that the management of the University would continue to support and encourage them to join appropriate professional organisations so that they would be able to compete with their counterparts all over the world.

Prof. Egbewole appreciated the Institute’s managerial and leadership training being inculcated in the  members of staff of the University.

The Vice Chancellor, who was grateful to God and the leadership of the  Institute for making the University the first institution in the North Central Nigeria to host the event, also applauded the Registrar, Mr Mansur Adeleke Alfanla, for being a transformational leader.

In his speech, the Guest Lecturer at the event, Dr Salam Abdussobur of the Federal University of Technology Abeokuta (FUNAAB), spoke on some societal challenges, which include poor managerial and leadership issues, that have affected the country till this  moment.

Dr Abdussobur said that Nigeria is blessed with abundant resources needed to facilitate development, adding, however, that poor management has  frustrated the progress of the country.

In her remarks, the Director, Centre for Management and Leadership, University of Ilorin, Prof. Moji Bakare-Odunola, who is also the pioneer Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Management and Leadership, emphasised the quality of leadership and overall governance in a country, which directly affects the level of political stability and development that a country can enjoy.

Prof. Bakare-Odunola said for Nigeria to develop, we will need leaders that will see leadership as sacrifice not a means of getting  money into their pockets.

On his part, Prof. Ibrahim Kayode Adam spoke on expectations from leaders and managers.

 He said a good leader and manager must have good communication skills to inspire his team.

In his remarks, the Registrar, Mr  Alfanla, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Institute, appreciated the management of the University for pioneering this unique programme.

He emphasised the importance of training as an integral part of administration and highlighted the need to equip staff with the skills necessary to enhance service delivery.

Mr Alfanla saluted the courage of UNILORIN staff members as he expressed  hope  that the presentations by the guest speaker would change many members’ lives for the development of the institute and the country at large.

Speaking earlier, the Country Director of the Institute, Mr Samuel Ojo, pointed out that the workshop was meant to raise competent managers and leaders.
