Departments roll out  drums as Oyenuga attains Professorship

The Department of Criminology and Security Studies and the Department of Sociology,  University of Ilorin, are in jubilant mood following the elevation of a sabbatical staff member at the Department of Criminology and Security Studies, Prof. Adedeji Saheed Oyenuga, to the prestigious Professorial Chair by his home institution.

Prof. Oyenuga, who is a United Nations consultant whose research interests are in Criminology, Social Problems, Deviant Behaviour and Critical Cybernetics, among others, is among the recently promoted academic staff of the Lagos State University, Ojo.

Recently, the newly elevated don led a team, which comprised some staff and students of the Department of Criminology and Security Studies, to carry out an experiment that successfully uncovered fingerprints of robbers, a novel feat in forensic research that has put the Department and indeed the University of Ilorin in the limelight.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Department recently, the Head of the Department of Criminology and Security Studies, Prof. Ali Arazeem Abdullahi, said, “I am elated that Oyenuga reached the pinnacle of his academic career during his sabbatical in the Department. He has proven to be an exceptional individual, bringing vibrancy, commitment, and significant value to the Department.  Since his arrival, his contributions have been invaluable, and through his presence, we truly understand the significance of sabbatical appointments.’’

The Head of the Department elaborated that “Prof. Oyenuga’s presence has  enriched the Department; his contributions to the breakthrough in fingerprint detection, which has garnered attention towards the Department, both locally and internationally, stands as a testament to his expertise.”

Prof. Abdullahi recalled how a distraught staff member of the University of Ilorin whose house was burgled, sought help from the Criminology Department having been disillusioned by lack of action by law enforcement agencies.  “Thanks to Oyenuga’s expertise, we were able to provide the solution, bringing relief and satisfaction to the individual. As a result of the discovery, we’ve received numerous enquiries, both from within and outside Ilorin. It’s remarkable how our Department, with Oyenuga’s expertise, has been able to accomplish what even security agencies couldn’t achieve”.

In his reaction, Prof. Oyenuga expressed gratitude to the management and staff of the Criminology Department for identifying with him following his elevation to the Professorial Chair by his home university.
