Adebisi emerges NITI’s new President

The Deputy Director of the Centre for Cultural Studies, University of Ilorin, Dr Aliy Abdulwahid Adebisi, has been elected new National President of the Nigerian Institute of Translators and Interpreters(NITI).

The election of Dr Adebisi was the highlight of the 19th annual conference of the NITI, which held in Abuja between Thursday, October 26 and Friday, October 27, 2023 with the theme “Leveraging Translation to Improve National Economy”.

The new President, who is also a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Arabic, University of Ilorin, was elected unopposed by delegates to the conference who came from all over Nigerian universities and other relevant institutions.

Similarly, an alumnus of the University of Ilorin, who was also the President of its Students Union in the 2015/2016 academic session, Mr Idrees Ibrahim Alao, was elected Public Relations Officer of the Institute.

In the same vein, a former Head, Department of Islamic Law, University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulRazzaq Abdulmajeed Alaro, mni, was also nominated for the award of the fellowship of the Institute. The nomination of the renowned scholar was in recognition of his exciting erudition and excellent service delivery in the realm of translation of Arabic scripts and manuscripts into Yoruba and English Languages and vice versa.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has welcomed the election of Dr Adebisi as the National President of the NITI.

The Vice Chancellor, in a statement signed by the University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, said that the management, staff and students of the University were very delighted to receive the news of the election.

Prof. Egbewole said that the election is not only an appreciation of the professionalism and competence of Dr Adebisi, who is also the Coordinator of Postgraduate Programmes of the Department of Arabic, but also a great honour to the University of Ilorin, considering the calibre of scholars from sister institutions who withdrew from the race in honour of the UNILORIN don.

The Vice Chancellor, who is also the Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU), added that the election of Dr Adebisi would further propel the alluring image of the University of Ilorin as a centre of academic excellence and win it greater admiration of stakeholders across and beyond Nigeria.

Prof. Egbewole, who said that he was particularly happy that the election conincided with the conclusion of the colourful 37th and 38th combined convocation ceremonies of the University, urged Dr Adebisi and Mr Alao to ensure that they discharge their duties to the NITI with probity and excellence with which the University is renowned.
