The Executive Director of the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO) and member of the Federal Government’s 2005/2006 Community Broadcasting Policy Drafting Committee, Dr Akin Akingbulu, has commended the UNILORIN 89.3 FM for being a leading contributor to the growth and sustainability of community broadcasting in Nigeria.

Dr Akingbulu gave the commendation last Tuesday (June 10, 2026) during a special interview programme on UNILORIN FM jointly- anchored by General Manager of the Station, Mr Idris Alooma and Mr Yinka Soliu

He said that the station continues to stand out among its contemporaries, noting that staff members of the station have consistently been making remarkable contributions to policy discussions and deliberations at seminars, workshops, and fora organised by CEMESO, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and other media bodies.

“These contributions have kept the industry active and effective in fulfilling its mandates,” he said, adding that “UNILORIN FM is not just broadcasting; it is shaping conversations that move community radio forward.”

The media scholar also pledged stronger collaboration with the station to further advance the cause of community radio in Nigeria. He expressed readiness to work more closely with UNILORIN FM to deepen impact at the grassroots level.

Reflecting on his visit to the University of Ilorin after two decades, Dr Akingbulu said the campus had undergone remarkable transformation. He praised the University’s reputation managers for projecting its image positively, adding that “good products still need projection for progress and sustainability.”

Speaking on broadcasting pluralism, Dr Akingbulu emphasised the need to prevent dominance by any single group or individual, avoid election manipulation, and ensure diverse platforms thrive. According to him, a pluralistic media environment is critical to moving the nation forward.

Dr Akingbulu, who was accompanied by Mr Timothew Bamidele, a media expert, was at the University to deliver a lecture on Communication and Innovation.
