The Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ilorin, Prof. Isreal Ogunlade, has charged students of the University to take deliberate steps towards building purposeful and impactful careers as he described strategic planning as a critical requirement for real-world success.

Prof. Ogunlade gave the charge penultimate Wednesday (April 15, 2026) through the Head of the Department of Animal Production, Prof. Sola Ojo, at the Career Launchpad programme organised by the Career Service Unit of the Faculty.

The Dean noted that the theme of the programme, “Strategic Planning for Real World Success,” was carefully designed to expose students to practical insights that would prepare them for life beyond the University.

He emphasised that students must begin early to align their academic pursuits with their career aspirations while cultivating the discipline required to excel in a competitive global environment.

Prof. Ogunlade further stressed that students of Agriculture must see themselves as future solution providers in food security, agribusiness, and sustainable development, urging them to maximise opportunities within and outside the classroom to build relevant competencies.

Prof. Ojo added that the Faculty remains committed to producing graduates who are not only academically sound but also equipped with the practical and entrepreneurial skills needed to thrive in the modern world.

One of the resource persons, Dr Olusegun Ojumola, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Crop Protection, explained that students, regardless of their current circumstances or challenges, have the potential to achieve success if they are intentional about their growth and development.

Dr Ojumola identified clarity as the first pillar of transformation, noting that students must define their career goals or, at the very least, be clear about paths they do not wish to pursue.

The don also highlighted capacity building as another critical pillar, urging students to complement their technical knowledge with essential skills such as digital literacy, communication, and networking to remain competitive in the labour market.

On consistency, Dr. Ojumola advised the students to adopt a culture of taking small but deliberate steps daily towards achieving their goals, stressing that sustained effort is key to long-term success.

He reminded the students that their starting point does not determine their destination, but rather their perception and handling of opportunities and challenges.

Also speaking, Prof. Adebisi Oluwatoba Adeyina, an Animal Production and Animal Physiology expert, emphasised the need for students to remain relevant in an ever-changing world, noting that career success goes beyond academic qualifications.

Prof. Adeyina encouraged the students to focus on impact by giving back to the University and society after graduation, rather than being solely driven by job titles.

He also highlighted the diverse career paths available within the Faculty of Agriculture, advising students to explore opportunities across various Departments and specialisations.

The programme, which attracted a large number of students, provided a platform for participants to gain valuable insights into career planning, personal development, and the practical steps required to succeed in the real world.
