The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has called on Level Advisers, Heads of Departments, and officials of the Admissions Office to ensure a seamless registration process for the institution’s large student population.

Prof. Egbewole, who made the appeal last Wednesday (April 8, 2026) while declaring open a workshop on the challenges of student registration, held at the University Multipurpose Hall, noted that an efficient and student-friendly registration system remains critical to the overall academic experience and institutional effectiveness.

The Vice Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye, however, called for coordinated efforts among all stakeholders involved in the registration process.

He commended the participants for their large turnout at the workshop, describing it as a clear demonstration of their commitment to improving the registration process and enhancing service delivery to students.

Earlier in her remarks, the Convener of the Workshop and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Moji Taibat Bakare-Odunola, explained that the training was organised in response to concerns raised by the University management over recurring challenges encountered during student registration exercises.

She stated that the initiative was designed to equip Level Advisers, Heads of Departments, and other relevant stakeholders with the necessary knowledge and skills required to effectively manage the registration process. According to her, a thorough understanding of the procedures would enable staff to provide timely guidance and support to students experiencing difficulties during registration.

Prof. Bakare-Odunola stressed the importance of adequately empowering frontline staff with accurate and up-to-date information, adding that this would enhance their capacity to respond efficiently to students’ needs and ensure a smoother registration experience.

In a presentation titled, “Students Registration Process: A Complete Guide,” the Director of COMSIT, Prof. Rasheed Gbenga Jimoh, explained that under ideal conditions, the student registration process at the University of Ilorin should not exceed two to three days.

Prof. Jimoh appealed to the Level Advisers to act as “foster parents” to students by providing guidance and maintaining open communication, especially during the registration period. He said that beyond assisting students with course registration, advisers should also ensure that students are properly educated on how to navigate the University portal. He said this would not only ease the registration process but also enhance students’ ability to effectively use the Learning Management System for academic activities such as assignment submission.

On data security, he cautioned Heads of Departments against sharing their login credentials, describing them as highly confidential. He warned that any activity carried out using a staff member’s portal would be traced back to the account holder, who would be held responsible for any breach or irregularity.

While addressing issues relating to payment of school charges, Prof. Jimoh made it clear that all payments must be made strictly through the official University portal. He warned students against making payments outside the platform, noting that such transactions would not reflect on the university system and could result in financial loss through fraud.

He specifically cautioned against direct payments via Remita outside the university’s integrated portal system, reiterating that students who engage in such practices risk being scammed.

To further support students, he encouraged them to utilise the University’s official support platform, support.unilorin.edu.ng, whenever they encounter challenges during registration. He highlighted the availability of the e-ticketing system, which allows students to report issues such as forgotten passwords, login difficulties, and other technical problems.

In his own presentation, titled “Admission Process and Effective Student Registration,” the Chairman of the University Admissions Committee, Prof. Abdulazeez Muhammad-Lawal, emphasised the importance of transparency, compliance, and quality assurance in the institution’s admission process.

Prof. Muhammad-Lawal noted that the use of the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS), operated by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has significantly enhanced transparency in monitoring candidates’ admission status, adding that the platform ensures that admission decisions are standardised, traceable, and aligned with national guidelines, thereby reducing irregularities in the process.

He stated that the Admissions Committee remains committed to strictly adhering to all instructions and guidelines approved by JAMB, adding that compliance is essential for maintaining credibility and fairness in the admission exercise.

The Chairman explained that admitting suitable candidates is critical to the reputation of the University and its standing as a leading institution, noting that high-performing students contribute positively to the University’s academic profile, enhance its global visibility, and make it more attractive to prospective students and institutional partners.
