The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has urged lecturers to ensure that teaching and learning outcomes align with national and institutional standards in order to sustain academic excellence and quality assurance within the University system.

Prof. Egbewole made the call last Monday (May 18, 2026) while speaking at a workshop organised by the University Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) in conjunction with the Centre for Research Development and In-House Training (CREDIT) at the Auditorium Basement.

Speaking on the theme, “Developing University-Wide Guidelines for Examination Practice: A Framework for Uniformity in Diversity,” the Vice Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Olalere Adeyemi, noted that the standardisation of examination processes remains essential to maintaining credibility, fairness, and consistency in the assessment of students across Faculties and Departments.

Prof. Egbewole stressed the need for lecturers to uphold professionalism in the setting of examination questions, moderation procedures, and allocation of examination duration in line with approved academic benchmarks.

He explained that adherence to uniform standards would further strengthen the University’s reputation as a leading institution committed to excellence.

The Vice Chancellor also commended the organisers of the workshop for initiating discussions aimed at addressing disparities in examination practices as he expressed confidence that the programme would enhance quality delivery and promote best practices across the institution.

In his remarks, the Director of the University Quality Assurance Unit, Prof. AbdulRazzaq AbdulMajeed Alaro, who was represented by the Deputy Director of the Unit, Mrs Bilikisu Giwa, explained that the workshop became necessary following observations made during the Harmattan Semester Examination of the 2025/2026 academic session by Quality Assurance Monitoring Committees.

Prof. Alaro disclosed that the committees observed inconsistencies in examination structure and time allocation across Departments, adding that such disparities created the need for a unified approach to examination administration within the University system.

He added that the workshop was organised to provide a platform for academic staff to deliberate on practical strategies for harmonising examination practices, improve coordination in assessment procedures, and promote compliance with approved academic regulations.

Delivering the keynote presentation, a Professor of Educational Technology at the University of Ilorin, Mudashiru Olalere Yusuf, described examination as a vital instrument for measuring the effectiveness of teaching and learning in higher education institutions.

Prof. Yusuf emphasised the need for lecturers to adopt innovative and technology-driven assessment methods capable of improving objectivity, reducing errors, and enhancing students’ learning experiences. He noted that effective assessment procedures should not only test knowledge but also encourage critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities among students.

The don further advocated continuous training and retraining of lecturers in contemporary evaluation techniques, stressing that sustainable quality assurance can only be achieved through collective commitment to professionalism, accountability, and global best practices in University education.

The event was attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Moji Taibat  Bakare-Odunola; the Deputy Vice Chancellor(Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye; the Registrar, Mr. Mansur Adeleke Alfanla; the Bursar, Mr. Abiodun Lawal; and the University Librarian, Prof. Kamaldeen Tunde Omopupa; among others.
