An Associate Professor at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, Dr Ruth Abiola Adimula, was recently conferred with the Leadership Excellence Award by the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN).
Dr Adimula, who is also a legal practitioner and gender advocate, received the award during the Dinner and Award Night that rounded off the 2026 Annual Tax Week. The event was organised by CITN, Ilorin District Society, under the Chairmanship of Mr Taofik Alabi.
Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the event, Dr Adimula praised members of the Institute for taking tax education campaigns beyond conference halls to markets and communities. She described the initiative as an effective way of enlightening Nigerians on the importance of complying with tax laws.
According to her, the week-long awareness campaign was aimed at educating citizens on their tax obligations and encouraging voluntary compliance with the country’s tax regulations.
“I want to commend the members who went into the streets and markets to educate people on tax compliance. I also want to join them in calling on Nigerians to comply with the provisions of the tax laws and fulfil their civic responsibility,” she said.
The legal practitioner stressed that women running businesses in the informal sector should not regard tax payment as an unnecessary burden, but rather as a contribution towards the provision of infrastructure and other essential public services.
She explained that the awareness exercise was also designed to reassure taxpayers that qualified tax professionals are available to provide guidance on tax matters, including the implementation of Nigeria’s tax reforms.
Dr Adimula advised residents to seek assistance from the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service, the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, and other certified tax practitioners whenever they require clarification on tax-related issues.
She further warned that ignorance of tax laws would not exempt anyone from fulfilling their legal obligations.
“Ignorance of the law is not an excuse. That is why we are encouraging people to ask questions and seek professional advice whenever they are in doubt,” she added.
