Olatunji tasks lecturers on diligence

The Head of the Department of Geophysics, Prof. Saminu Olatunji, has charged lecturers to demonstrate greater commitment to their academic responsibilities, stressing that the quality of higher education depends largely on the dedication of teaching staff.
Speaking during an interview with UNILORIN Bulletin last Wednesday (April 29, 2026) in his office, Prof. Olatunji noted that lack of commitment remains a critical challenge within Nigeria’s educational system.
He explained that while the issue is often discussed at the national level, its impact is more evident within academic environments where inadequate dedication to teaching, research, and mentorship undermines institutional goals.
According to him, commitment in academia goes beyond mere classroom presence as he emphasised the need for lecturers to be actively involved in research, timely delivery of lectures, proper student supervision, and continuous professional development.
He added that when lecturers fail to fully engage in these responsibilities, the overall standard of education declines, ultimately affecting students’ academic and professional outcomes.
Prof. Olatunji further urged lecturers to adopt a renewed sense of responsibility, noting that universities play a pivotal role in national development through knowledge production and human capital development.
He stressed that lecturers must serve as role models by always demonstrating discipline, integrity, and dedication to their duties.
Prof. Olatunji also highlighted the importance of fostering a supportive learning environment, where students are always encouraged to think critically and engage meaningfully with course contents.
Such an environment, he said, can only be achieved when lecturers are genuinely committed to their roles as educators and mentors.
The don, who appreciated the improving quality of service delivery obtainable at the Better by far University, called for collective efforts among academic staff of his Department so as to reposition it for more excellence.
Prof. Olatunji pointed out that sustained commitment would not only improve academic standards but also enhance the reputation of the institution within the broader educational landscape.
