The Dean of the Postgraduate School, University of Ilorin, Prof. Friday Nwosu, has said that lack of distraction accounts for its leading position among its peers in the country, disclosing that the PG School would soon transition to a College.

Prof. Nwosu, who is a 1985 graduate of the University, stated this last Tuesday (April 21, 2026) while featuring on ‘‘Table Talk’’, a current affairs programme of UNILORIN 89.3 FM. The programme was jointly anchored by the duo of the Station’s Manager, Mr Idris Akintola Ibrahim (Alooma) and Mr Abdulkadir Yinka Saliu (Magaji Nda).

The Dean said that the School has continued to attract students from everywhere because of the assurance that they would graduate as scheduled.

He explained that the School does not delay students provided such students are serious with their academic works.

Prof. Nwosu, who is a former Director of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SWEIS) Unit, explained that over 1256 students were admitted into various Master degree programmes in the ongoing academic session while 230 doctoral students were also admitted during the same period.

The don explained that the University of Ilorin is one of the 18 universities certified by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to run postgraduate programmes.

Prof. Nwosu, who teaches at the Department of Industrial Chemistry, added that the University has more than enough human and material resources to run postgraduate programmes across its 16 Faculties.

He explained that the PG School also attracts researchers from all over the world, particularly from Germany, Ethiopia, Ghana and Cameroon, among others, as he said that efforts are ongoing towards establishing students exchange programme with foreign universities.

Prof. Nwosu said that graduates of the University of Ilorin who graduated with either a Second Class (Upper Division) or First Class are exempted from siting for a Qualifying Examination before they are admitted. He said that those from other universities are mandatorily required to sit for and pass the examination before they can be offered admission.

He disclosed that admission into the PG School does not recognise any catchment area, saying that qualified students are admitted without any form of discrimination.

The Dean commended the leadership of the Postgraduate Students Association (POGSASS), University of Ilorin for the good job they are doing.

He said that the Association has been making so many interventions, which are impacting on the service delivery of the School.

Prof. Nwosu appealed to students of the School who may be facing one challenge or the other to report such without further delay, assuring them that swift attention would be given to such.

He encouraged interested candidates to take advantage of the ongoing admission into the School to apply on time, saying that application for admissions into the School would close by the end of May, 2026.

Prof. Nwosu, who is the 16th Dean of the School, said that very soon the School would transition to a College, disclosing that the process is almost completed.

He said that by the time the transition is achieved, more quality services would be enjoyed by the students and the society at large.

Prof. Nwosu added that the School also has facilities for students with special challenges as he said that they would have no problem whatsoever.

He encouraged senior academic staff of the University to cooperate with the School to ensure the production of more manpower for national and human development by the School.

Prof. Nwosu commended the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN,  on his support to the Postgraduate School as he also thanked other Principal Officers for their fraternity to the School.
