The Coordinator of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) at the Directorate of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin, Mr Mustafa Abubakar, has charged students of the Linguistics Immersion Centre (LIC) of the University to remain committed and focused as they commenced the training programme aimed at equipping them with practical skills in communication, media operations, and English language proficiency.

The students, drawn from Cameroon and Benin Republic and representing both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, were received last Monday (April 20, 2026) at the Directorate where activities commenced with an orientation session.

Introducing the students to the administrative structure and daily operations of the Directorate, Mr Abubakar disclosed that the orientation was designed to equip the volunteers with essential writing, speaking, and reporting skills, with particular emphasis on the effective use of English in public interactions and professional media practice.

He highlighted the importance of clarity, accuracy, and professionalism in communication, urging the students to take the training seriously as a foundation for their future careers.

Following the briefing, the students were taken on a guided tour of the Directorate’s facilities and assigned their first practical exercises, including English-speaking proficiency tasks based on their initial observations.

The Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, who formally received the students, encouraged them to be diligent and to make effective use of the opportunity provided by the University to build their proficiency capacity.

In his remarks, the General Manager of UNILORIN 89.3 FM, Mr Idris Akintola Ibrahim (Alooma), expressed the station’s readiness to partner with the Immersion Centre.

He outlined a structured tripartite model for students’ development, comprising training/teaching, practice, and certification.

“UNILORIN FM is ready to teach and guide students through the rudiments of broadcasting, news writing, and vocal interaction,” Mr Alooma stated.

Also speaking, the Deputy Editor of UNILORIN Bulletin, Mr Abubakar Imam, admonished the students to remain focused on their primary academic goals while pursuing practical knowledge.

He specifically urged them to acquire English proficiency and to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the Ilorin people during their stay.

Further technical support was promised by a senior staff member of  UNILORIN FM, Mr Bunmi Obafemi, who assured the students of comprehensive mentorship in audio editing.

Responding on behalf of the volunteers, the class representative, Mr Ashafa Ahmadou, expressed appreciation to the Corporate Affairs Unit for the warm reception and the opportunity to enhance their English language skills.

He pledged that the class would strictly abide by the University’s rules and actively engage with the programme to master the language and gain a better understanding of Nigerian culture.
