The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has confirmed that the security architecture of the institution has improved significantly over the past one and a half years, attributing the progress to the commitment and professionalism of the University’s Security Division.
Prof. Egbewole made this known last Wednesday (April 15, 2026) during a send-off ceremony held in honour of 13 retired staff members of the Division at the Auditorium Basement.
Commending the Security Division under the leadership of the Ag. Director of Security, Mr Paul Ogidi, the Vice Chancellor described their performance as “extremely wonderful,” noting that the noticeable improvements in campus safety were the result of deliberate efforts and sustained vigilance.
He, however, stressed that despite the achievements recorded, there is still room for further improvement.
Addressing the retirees, Prof. Egbewole congratulated them on the successful completion of their service, describing their retirement as a significant milestone that comes only by divine grace. He acknowledged the risks associated with security duties and appreciated them for their dedication and sacrifices in ensuring the safety of lives and property within the University community.
The Vice Chancellor urged the retired officers to continue to identify with the University and contribute their wealth of experience when called upon. According to him, their deep understanding of the institution’s terrain and security dynamics remains invaluable, even in retirement.
While applauding the general performance of the security personnel, Prof. Egbewole cautioned them against misconduct among a few operatives, warning that the actions of a minority could tarnish the reputation of the entire unit.
He, therefore, called on the security personnel to uphold integrity and professionalism at all times, and to take proactive steps in identifying and addressing any form of indiscipline within their ranks.
Speaking earlier, the Ag. Director of Security, Mr Ogidi, lauded the Vice Chancellor for his support to the Division, noting that every request made by the Unit has consistently received prompt approval.
The Director said that the continued support has significantly enhanced their ability to safeguard lives and property within the University community, while also boosting the morale of officers and operatives.
Reflecting on the nature of security work, Mr Ogidi described it as a high-risk profession, emphasising that personnel often leave their homes uncertain of what the next moment may bring. He noted that despite these challenges, officers remain committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for staff, students, and other stakeholders, making it imperative to celebrate those who have successfully completed their years of service.
He added that the decision to honour the retirees was borne out of the need to appreciate their sacrifices and dedication, as they transition into another phase of life.
Mr Ogidi assured the Vice Chancellor that the Security Division would continue to justify the confidence reposed in it by sustaining their efforts and striving to make the University proud through improved service delivery.
Responding on behalf of the retired personnel, Mr Afolabi Timothy and Mr Ogunbiyi Benjamin appreciated the gesture, describing it as the first time in decades that retired officers of the Division would be formally celebrated.
They encouraged their colleagues in active service to remain faithful and dedicated to their duties.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of gifts to the 13 retired officers and a health talk delivered by a Principal Medical Officer at the University of Ilorin Health Centre, Dr. Hikmah O. Amoloye.
