The Head of the Department of Forest Resources Management, University of Ilorin, Prof. Folaranmi D. Babalola, has underscored the critical role of forests in driving sustainable economic growth, environmental stability and human well-being, describing them as indispensable assets for national development.

Prof. Babalola stated this penultimate Saturday (March 21, 2026) while speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin at the University Teak Plantation on the occasion of the International Day of Forests.

He noted that the Day was set aside by the United Nations in 2012 to draw the attention of the global community to the significance of forests.

He said the theme of this year’s edition, “Forests and Economies,” highlights the direct link between healthy forests and thriving economies, particularly in developing countries where millions depend on forest resources for their livelihoods.

According to Prof. Babalola, forests contribute significantly to both rural and urban economies by providing essential resources such as fuelwood, food, medicinal products, employment opportunities and income generation.

He explained that beyond economic benefits, forests play vital ecological roles, especially in carbon sequestration, which helps mitigate the effects of climate change, one of the most pressing global challenges.

Prof. Babalola also emphasised the socio-cultural importance of forests, noting that they preserve indigenous knowledge, cultural heritage and traditional practices that define many communities.

He, however, expressed concern over the increasing rate of deforestation globally, warning that the continuous loss of forest resources poses serious threats to biodiversity, climate stability and human survival.

He called for a renewed commitment to sustainable forest management through tree planting, conservation and responsible utilisation of forest resources by individuals, institutions and governments.

Prof. Babalola commended the efforts of the University of Ilorin, noting that the institution has made significant strides in afforestation through the establishment of extensive tree plantations, including teak and oil palm, across its campus.

He added that the           Department of Forest Resources Management has continued to train skilled professionals and promote research, community service and international collaborations in sustainable forestry.

Prof. Babalola further disclosed that the institution’s Campus Tree Management Committee plays a vital role in maintaining environmental sustainability through tree planting initiatives and proper management of existing trees.

He urged members of the University community and the general public to actively participate in tree planting and proper post-planting care, stressing that safeguarding forests is essential for securing the future of humanity.
