The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University of Ilorin, Prof. Ibrahim Abdulganiyu Jawondo, has commended the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, on his relentless support to the Faculty, particularly since he assumed the leadership of the Faculty last year.

Prof. Jawondo, who is also the immediate past Director of the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS), gave this commendation last Monday (March 16, 2026) while speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin in his office.

The Professor of History and International Studies explained that the Vice Chancellor has always been supporting several initiatives aimed at improving the environment and overall functioning of the Faculty.

The Dean said that these efforts were largely driven by his personal commitment, adding that through the support of the Professor of Jurisprudence and International Law several developments have already come to the Faculty, while many others are still being expected.

Prof. Jawondo, who is also the third Director of the Centre for Ilorin Studies (CILS), recalled that one of the major changes introduced by him has to do with the improved physical environment of the Faculty.

He said that anyone who visited the Faculty in recent times would notice that its surroundings have witnessed significant improvement.

Prof. Jawondo, who previously served as the Head of the Department of History and International Studies, explained that he drew inspiration from what he learnt in primary school about the significance of beautification of learning environment, saying that the inspiration ensured that trees within the Faculty premises were also painted in the official colours of the Faculty.

He said that this has not only created a unique identity for the Faculty but also a scenery that cannot be found elsewhere within the University.

Prof. Jawondo said that as an environmental enthusiast, he also made sure that the trees around the Faculty are often properly trimmed and maintained to improve its aesthetics.

The don said that instead of allowing the vegetation to grow into bushes that could become untidy and potentially hazardous to staff members and students, they have been shaped to serve as ornaments that beautify the environment.

He added that the management of the Faculty also paid serious attention to the security of life and property within the Faculty. He said that security is not only about the number of personnel available it is also about creating an enabling and well-organised environment that discourages criminal activities.

Towards achieving this initiative, the Dean said that the sit-out at the Faculty was reinforced and improved with the fixing of solar-powered illuminations, which attracts students of the Faculty and their colleagues from other Faculties who often trooped to the facility to study and interact among themselves. He pointed out that the facility now serves both the security personnel and students who use it regularly.

Prof. Jawondo said that the impressive presence of the students helps to discourage theft and other forms of misconduct, particularly around the frontage of the Faculty.

He said that as a result of these measures the Faculty has not experienced any major incidence of theft since the initiative was introduced.

The Dean added that his administration has also strengthened security arrangements by increasing the number of security personnel and improving the overall monitoring of activities around the Faculty with the installation of solar-powered CCTV camera in strategic locations.

Prof. Jawondo assured theĀ  Faculty members that these efforts would be continued to ensure that a safe, clean, and conducive environment for both staff and students within the Faculty is sustained.
