UNILORIN fresher earns international recognition
By Mubarak Oladosu
A 100 level student of the Department of Geology and Mineral Sciences, University of Ilorin, Mr Abdulsalam Olamide Suleiman, has emerged as one of the winners of the second edition of a Spanish international competition on Artificial Intelligence, OdiseIA4Good.
The competition, which is supported by google, was held from February 23,2026 to February 25 2026. It attracted creatives around the world who have innovative ideas, which can impact and change the world, using Artificial Intelligence.
In a chat with UNILORIN Bulletin last Tuesday (March 20, 2026) on his project, Mr Sulaiman disclosed that he wrote a programme called Geoguard, which could detect potential environmental disasters.
Mr Sulaiman, who was the only Nigerian participant at the competition, described GeoGuard as a “predictive environmental intelligence platform designed to monitor and forecast coastal erosion and flooding.”
While explaining the improvement of his product over existing coastal monitoring system, the young programmer said that “traditional coastal monitoring relies on expensive physical sensors and hardware that only detect changes after they have occurred.
This makes it difficult for regions like West Africa to prepare for land loss and infrastructure damage effectively.
Geoguard, which he developed, processes visible data from the satellite to track live shoreline changes using Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) unlike the existing model that only looks at data.
For winning the award, Mr Sulaiman will be mentored, along with other winners across the world by the Head of Corporate Accounts at OdiseIA , Frank Eskadell on how to build their ideas into an economically viable enterprise.
Speaking on his journey to winning, Mr Suleiman disclosed that he has a passion for coding and he had burnt the midnight candle overtime, out of curiosity trying to improve his knowledge of Physics, Mathematics and Advanced Artificial Intelligence tools using open source materials that are available online.
He, however, revealed that he could only join the competition virtually because of financial constraints and appealed for support towards having a laboratory and a standard modern computer in order to optimise his ideas.
The wizkid appreciated the University management especially in the Department of Geology and Mineral Science for their support and promised to always do his best for the University.
