An alumnus of the University of Ilorin, Maxwell Taiye David, has emerged as the best graduating postgraduate student at Linnaeus University, Sweden, earning the prestigious honour of delivering the valedictory speech at the institution’s 2025 Master’s Graduation Ceremony.
Maxwell studied Criminology and Security Studies from the University of Ilorin and graduated as best student in Peace and Development Work.
While reflecting on a journey marked by resilience at the graduation ceremony held last Tuesday (May 27, 2025), the valedictorian opened his speech with a heartfelt recollection of October 11, 2024 — the day he almost dropped out of the programme due to overwhelming challenges.
“Mentally, emotionally, even financially, I was at my breaking point. But I remembered my ‘why’ the reason I started and that kept me going”, he said.
In a speech that drew tears, smiles, and a standing ovation from fellow graduates, Faculty members, and guests, the UNILORIN alumnus praised the collective perseverance of the graduating class.
“The past one to two years have tested us deeply being far from our families, adjusting to new seasons, and juggling academics with work. But we made it!” he declared, urging his classmates to give themselves a well deserved round of applause.
Speaking on behalf of the Class of 2025, he expressed profound gratitude to the Linnaeus University Management, Faculty, and non-academic staff for fostering a supportive academic environment.
