As the world marked the International Day for Social Workers on March 18, 2025, the Head of the Department of Social Works, University of Ilorin, Dr Abonyi Sunday, has commended the graduates of the Department for making the University proud nationally and internationally.
In an interview with UNILORIN Bulletin, Dr Abonyi revealed that the Department, established in 2013 with just 100 students, has grown exponentially, with over 1,000 students currently enrolled, adding that it has also produced more than 5,000 graduates spread across the globe.
Dr Abonyi attributed the Department’s success to its ability to provide students with a comprehensive education and practical skills, making them highly sought after in the job market.
He said despite being a relatively new course in Nigeria, Social Work has gained widespread acceptance, with many universities now offering the programme. Dr Abonyi noted that the field of Social Work offers numerous job opportunities, particularly in foreign countries, where there is a high demand for caregivers.
He disclosed that the Department is set to commence the Master programme in the next academic session, providing further opportunities for students to advance their careers.
Dr Abonyi stated further that the University of Ilorin marked the International Day for Social Workers with a series of activities, including awareness creation, symposium, care giving, and gift-giving at motherless homes. The theme for this year’s celebration was “Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing.”
The event provided a platform for Social Work students and professionals to come together, share experiences, and reaffirm their commitment to promoting wellbeing and social justice.
