UNILORIN students qualify for TLG Capital-funded African entrepreneurship competition
By Mustafa Abubakar
Forty students of the University of Ilorin have qualified to participate in an African Entrepreneurship Competition funded by TLG Capital, an Africa-focused investment firm, in partnership with the University of Westminster and the University of Ghana.
This development was made available to the UNILORIN Bulletin last Wednesday (October 28, 2026) by Prof. Foluke Eunice Sola-Ojo.
The competition brings together students from Nigeria, Ghana and the United Kingdom to collaborate on innovative solutions to some pressing development challenges in Africa, through entrepreneurship.
At UNILORIN, participation in the competition is being coordinated through the African Support Bureau for Entrepreneurship (ASBE Students Club) of the Technical and Entrepreneurship Centre (TEC).
The 40 students were selected from 210 applicants following a competitive selection process. They will participate in cross cultural teams comprising five or six students drawn from the three partner universities.
The teams are expected to research, develop and pitch viable, finance-focused business ventures addressing real-world challenges, with emphasis on social impact and long-term sustainability.
The competition is being coordinated by Prof. Sola-Ojo, while the immediate past Director of TEC, Prof. U.A. Raheem, and former Director of TEC and Chairman, ASBE Governing Board, Prof. P.O. Adeoye, will serve as mentors to the successful UNILORIN candidates in the cross-cultural teams.
The initiative is designed to equip participating students with entrepreneurial skills, networks and practical experience required to develop sustainable solutions to challenges confronting communities across Africa.
Areas to be explored by the students include poverty alleviation, financial inclusion, healthcare, sanitation and sustainable agriculture.
A major component of the competition is student-led research, which requires participants to identify and define the challenges they seek to address. This is intended to ensure that proposed solutions are based on local realities and community needs.
The proposed ventures are also required to align with at least one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reflecting the competition’s emphasis on responsible innovation and sustainable development.
