UNILORIN FM hails graduating students on ₦.5m equipment donation

The General Manager of UNILORIN 89.3 FM, Mr Idris Akintola Ibrahim (Alooma), last Monday (July 27, 2026) commended some final-year students of the Department of Telecommunications, University of Ilorin, for donating weather forecast equipment worth about half a million naira to the radio station, describing the gesture as laudable and a clear demonstration of impact and community service.
Mr Alooma said the donation, a Quadrifilar Helix Antenna system, will enable the radio station to provide first-hand, accurate, and consistent weather reports to its listeners. He explained that the equipment works by receiving low-rate picture transmission signals from satellites in space at 137.9 megahertz, which can then be decoded to produce images used for weather monitoring and prediction.
Speaking during the presentation, the project lead, Idowu Peter Divine, said the system was built by a group of six students under the supervision of Dr O. E. Tiamiyu of the Telecommunications Department. He listed other members of the group as Solomon Sunday Oluwasomidotun, Akira Mercy, Ishola Odunayo Mary, Bello Abdulwadud, and Anuwa Ezekiel Olanrewaju. He noted that they chose UNILORIN FM because the project could best serve the University community even after their graduation.
Joining the ace broadcaster to receive the equipment ahead of installation were the Head of the Production Unit, Mr Tolu Jolayemi, and an Assistant Director in the Directorate of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Mubarak Oladosu.
Mr Alooma assured the students that the station would take proper care of the equipment and liaise with the Telecommunications Department for maintenance and technical support. He added that the station would continue to partner with both internal and external stakeholders of the University of Ilorin for the growth and development of the institution.
The ace broadcaster further used the opportunity to charge other Unilorites to emulate the spirit of giving back demonstrated by the Telecommunications students. He said that in whatever capacity students find themselves, they should strive to contribute meaningfully to the community, adding that the management and staff of UNILORIN FM are profoundly grateful for the donation.
