A Professor in the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, University of Ilorin, Adeniyi Saheed Aremu, has urged his colleagues in the academia to always take advantage of public service appointments that may come their ways in order to boost their academic and professional horizons.

Prof. Aremu gave this advice penultimate Friday (May 1, 2026) in a chat with UNILORIN Bulletin in his office.

The don, who is one of the academic staff of the University recently promoted to the rank of Professor, said that taking such appointments would expose academics to more information about their disciplines and the society at large.

Speaking on his recently completed tenure as the Managing Director of the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority (LNRBDA), Ilorin, Prof. Aremu said that his tenure at the agency was a great opportunity.

He pointed out that his eight years sojourn at LNRBDA was a blessing to him in so many ways as it enabled him to acquire knowledge that cannot be found either in the classroom or the library and even laboratories.

Prof. Aremu also said that the tenure similarly assisted him to make new friends and share experiences with his colleagues from all over the country and beyond.

The don said that the exposure his tenure as the Chief Executive of the intervention agency granted him would not only be to his personal advantage but also to that of the University, particularly the students who would benefit.

On the quality of graduates of the University who he met while on the field, Prof. Aremu said that it was very impressive.

He said that at LNRBDA and other agencies he interacted with he came across many ex-Unilorites that are doing exceptionally well.

Prof. Aremu added that whenever he visited the parent Ministry of Water Resources and other places in Abuja and elsewhere in the course of his duties, graduates of the University of Ilorin were always eager to assist him in every way possible.

He, therefore, thanked the authorities of the University for granting him the privilege to serve the nation at LNRBDA, saying that it was a privilege he would never take for granted.
