OAU to honour Egbewole with Distinguished Alumnus Award of Excellence

As part of activities lined up to mark the 65th anniversary of the establishment of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, would be conferred with the prestigious Distinguished Alumnus Award of Excellence by the first generation University.

The award, which would also be conferred on a few other outstanding alumni of the University, would be presented to the renowned Professor of Jurisprudence and International Law and Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU) today, Monday, June 8, 2026, at the University premises.

A letter dated May 20, 2026 and addressed to Prof. Egbewole by the OAU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Adebayo Banire, explained that the award would be granted to Prof. Egbewole in recognition of his immense contributions to the growth of the University and his distinguished career, particularly his stellar leadership as a Vice-Chancellor, which, he said has brought immense honour to his alma mater.

To further mark the milestone, Prof. Banire explained that the event would also be marked with the launching of the ₦10 billion President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT) Centre of Excellence in Intercultural Dialogue and Youth Empowerment, a landmark project dedicated to national unity and youth development.

Meanwhile, the management of the University of Ilorin has welcomed the celebration of its Vice Chancellor by his alma mater.

A statement issued by the Director of Corporate Affairs of the University, Mr Kunle Akogun, said that the entire University of Ilorin community is happy that the worth of their beloved Vice Chancellor is being recognised again.

Mr Akogun said while Prof. Egbewole has received several awards in the past, this particular recognition from his alma mater stands out because it is akin to a prophet being honoured at home.

The Director thanked the OAU management for deeming Prof. Egbewole worthy of such a high honour, particularly at this point in time.

Mr Akogun explained that the award would not only encourage Prof. Egbewole to offer more patriotic contributions but would also stimulate others to emulate him in quality service delivery.

He assured the OAU that Prof. Egbewole would continue to make his alma mater and the larger Nigerian society proud.
