The Nigerian National Council for Adult Education (NNCAE) has conferred its honorary membership on the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, in recognition of his support for the Council and its activities.
The honour was bestowed on the Vice Chancellor when the leadership of the NNCAE, led by its President, Prof. Babangida Ladan, visited him in his office last Monday (October 5, 2026), ahead of the Council’s 2026 Annual National Conference hosted by the University of Ilorin.
The NNCAE President also presented a collection of the publications of the Council to the University Library. The materials included copies of the National Journal for Adult Education for 2019, 2020 and 2021, as well as the Book of Readings, published in 2021 to commemorate the Council’s 50th anniversary.
Prof. Ladan added that subsequent editions of the journal, from 2023 to date, are available online free of charge and have been assigned Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs). He said the link to the publications would also be forwarded to the University Library to facilitate access by researchers and students.
He recalled how the NNCAE Conference hosted by the University of Ilorin in 2014 became a turning point in the revival and subsequent growth of the Council, saying that prior to 2014, the Council had experienced a period of inactivity. He added that the Unilorin Conference provided an opportunity for its revival.
The NNCAE President also thanked the Vice Chancellor for granting approval for the Conference and providing accommodation, venue and other logistical support towards ensuring its success. He particularly appreciated the Director of the Centre for Students with Special Needs, University of Ilorin, Prof. Taiwo Ambali, and Prof. Ayodele Anthony Fajonyomi of the Department of Adult and Primary Education, for their sustained commitment to the Council and their efforts in promoting its activities since 2014.
Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Egbewole, appreciated the NNCAE for choosing the University of Ilorin to host its 2026 Conference and for considering him worthy of honorary membership of the Council. He also commended the Association for the strides it had recorded over the years, particularly its contributions to research and scholarship in Adult Education.
Prof. Egbewole noted that the publications presented to the University demonstrated the Council’s commitment to research and knowledge production, urging its members to sustain the momentum.
He expressed hope that the Conference would generate useful policy recommendations capable of strengthening adult education and informing government decisions in Nigeria.
The Vice Chancellor also congratulated the Council on its contributions to the development of adult education in the country, while challenging the organisers to surpass the achievements recorded during the 2014 Conference at the University.
He said he looked forward to a conference whose outcomes would have lasting positive impact on society and urged the NNCAE to make the 2026 edition a reference point for meaningful initiatives in Adult Education.
