IEDPU hails Egbewole for honouring Ambali

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has been commended for mobilising the University community to give the late 9th Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, OON, deserving and befitting funeral ceremonies.

This commendation is contained in a letter dated Monday, June 22, 2026 and addressed to the Vice Chancellor by the National President of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU), Alhaji Abdulmumini Ayo Abdulmalik, a copy of which was made available to UNILORIN Bulletin.

Alhaji Abdulmalik, who is also an alumnus of the better by far University, said that the Union was delighted that the University under the leadership of Prof. Egbewole honoured “our late son, who was also the nineth Vice Chancellor of your University, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, OON, following his sudden passage to the world beyond in the early hours of Saturday, June 6, 2026”.

The community leader said that the Union appreciated the participation of a large number of members of the University community, led by the Vice Chancellor himself at the burial and subsequent fidau prayers organised in honour of the late Prof. Ambali.

Alhaji Abdulmalik added that the Union would remain exceptionally grateful for the Special Senate Session organised in honour of the late former Vice Chancellor on Monday, June 15, 2026 by the University.

The Union added that it was “delighted with the participation of seasoned academics, distinguished administrators and other categories of individuals as well as groups who converged on the University Auditorium and took time one after the other to recall and place on record the fascinating personality of the late Prof. Ambali and his exciting contributions towards the growth and development of the University, particularly during his tenure as the Chief Executive of the University between 2012 and 2017”.

Alhaji AbdulMalik, who  is also a retired Assistant Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, noted that “beyond appreciating all the wonderful expressions of love for our late son, we are also grateful for the expression of your University’s desire to immortalise him”.

He added that “if and when the intended gesture is eventually actualised, it would not only go a long way in reducing the gravity of his loss to the entire Ilorin Emirate community, particularly members of his immediate family,  it would also enhance the alluring relationship between your University and its host community”.
