Egbewole tasks UNILORIN Man O’ War on discipline, integrity

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has charged members of the Man O’ War Nigeria, University of Ilorin Cadet Unit, to uphold discipline, integrity and service as they represent the institution in all spheres of life.
Prof. Egbewole, who was represented by the Director of the Technical and Entrepreneurship Centre (TEC), University of Ilorin, Prof. Usman Adebimpe Raheem, gave the charge last Monday (July 27, 2026), at the 39th Passing Out Parade of the Cadet Unit held at the Main Bowl of the University Stadium Complex.
Addressing the newly passed-out cadets, the Vice Chancellor described the parade as both a celebration of endurance and a call to higher responsibility. He noted that the training received through Man O’ War was designed to build character that would extend beyond the parade ground into the classroom, the community and the nation at large.
“You are not just passing out. You are passing into service. The uniform you wear today is a symbol of sacrifice, order and patriotism. Let discipline, selflessness and integrity be your daily uniform, even when no one is watching,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor urged the cadets to see themselves as ambassadors of the University, stressing that their conduct would either promote or diminish the image of the institution. He encouraged them to lead by example and to deploy the skills of emergency response, civic education and security awareness acquired during training to promote peace on campus and beyond.
Prof. Egbewole also emphasised the need to balance practical training with academic excellence. He charged them to remain diligent in their studies and to develop their minds to match the physical fitness they had attained.
“Let your brain be as sharp as your drill. The world will respect a cadet who can both command a squad and defend an idea in the lecture hall,” the Vice Chancellor added.
Prof. Egbewole further advised the new cadets to embrace resilience, adaptability and continuous learning as they navigate life after training. He reminded them that as products of Unilorin, they carry the responsibility to uphold the law and protect constituted authority.
He commended the Commandant, officers and instructors of the Unit for their commitment to moulding responsible youths. He assured the cadets of the University management’s continued support for programme that promote leadership, service and national development.
In his remarks, the State Commander, Man O’ War Nigeria, Kwara State Command, MC Hussein Abdullahi, who was represented by the Deputy State Commander, DMC Abdullahi Yusuf Babatunde, noted that the University of Ilorin Cadet Unit is rated among the best campus-based units in the state.
He commended the University management for its consistent support for the Unit and urged the newly passed-out cadets to be good ambassadors of both Man O’ War Nigeria and the University. He charged them to deploy the discipline, emergency response skills and civic consciousness acquired during training to support national security efforts and community development. He also called on them to uphold the core values of the organisation and to remain loyal, dedicated and service-oriented in all their engagements.
The event featured march past, drills, and the presentation of awards to outstanding cadets. Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Acting Director of the Security Division, Mr Paul Ogidi, represented by the Deputy Chief Security Officer, Mr Olarewaju Yahaya Shuaib; the Staff Adviser, Man O’ War, University of Ilorin Cadet Unit, Dr (Mrs.) T. A. Akangbe; the Chairman, NASU, UNILORIN Chapter, Comrade Suberu Ibrahim; the Director of Sports, Prof. T. O. Ibrahim; and the Chief Operating Officer, Craft Innovation, Mr. Abdulrasak Ahmed Abiodun, among others.
