Egbewole tasks new Student Union EXCO on quality leadership

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has charged the newly elected Student Union Executive Committee of the institution to demonstrate exemplary leadership and uphold the core values of the University throughout their tenure.
Prof. Egbewole stated this last Monday (June 22, 2026) while receiving the newly elected student leaders in his office.
The Vice Chancellor said the University had deliberately created the platforms through student activities to nurture leadership skills and prepare students for greater responsibilities in the society.
Prof. Egbewole noted that the student leaders were elected to serve and, therefore, they must discharge their duties with dedication, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility.
He emphasised that the core values of the University should remain their guiding principles, stressing that they must work to sustain and strengthen those values while improving the quality of leadership and conduct within the Student Union.
The renowned legal luminary reminded the student leaders that their responsibilities extend beyond those who voted for them, describing them as representatives of the entire student body and stakeholders of the University community.
According to him, by seeking elective offices, they had willingly offered themselves for service, a commitment that demands accountability not only to students and the University Administration but also to God.
The Vice Chancellor expressed confidence that the new Executive Committee would enjoy a successful and peaceful tenure, praying for divine guidance and wisdom for the team.
Assuring the student leaders of the support of the University, Prof. Egbewole expressed optimism that a cordial and productive relationship between the Administration and the Student Union would foster greater development, enhance the institution’s reputation, and contribute positively to its ranking and standing.
Prof. Egbewole, who commented on the keenly contested election, urged the newly elected officers to embrace inclusiveness by reaching out to their opponents and supporters of other candidates.
He observed that the narrow margins recorded in some of the contests reflected the diversity of opinions among students and called on the new leadership to unite all interests for the common good. He said such inclusiveness would strengthen the executive’s effectiveness and promote harmony across the University community.
In his remarks, the Ag. Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Alex Morenikeji Akanmu, described the election as peaceful, transparent and highly competitive, noting that the exercise reflected the democratic culture of the University.
Dr Akanmu commended members of the Students’ Union Electoral Committee, security personnel and students for their orderly conduct throughout the electoral process.
The Dean disclosed that a total of 111 candidates participated in the election, which commenced on June 6, 2026, adding that the keenly contested polls recorded impressive voter turnout across the various Faculties and Departments. He expressed satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the exercise and attributed its success to the cooperation of all stakeholders involved.
Dr Akanmu congratulated the newly elected executives and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them by the student body through selfless service, accountability and dedication to duty. He also enjoined them to work closely with the University Management in promoting peace, unity and the core values for which the University of Ilorin is renowned.
The Chairman of the Student Union Electoral Committee, Mr Agboluaje Victor, who is a student of the Faculty of Agriculture, expressed profound appreciation to the University Administration for providing a conducive environment for the conduct of the elections.
He commended the management for its support, guidance, and commitment to democratic values, noting that the successful and peaceful conduct of the electoral process reflected the confidence of the University in students’ capacity to lead responsibly.
Mr Agboluaje also thanked all contestants, stakeholders, and students for their cooperation and maturity throughout the election period.
Also speaking, the President-Elect, Mr Mozeed Adam , expressed profound gratitude to the students for the confidence they reposed in him through their votes.
The President-Elect pledged to provide purposeful, transparent, and inclusive leadership that would prioritise students’ welfare, academic excellence, and constructive engagement with the University Management.
Mr Adam, who is a 400 Level student of the Faculty of Law, called on students to remain united and support the new administration in its efforts to advance the collective interests of the student body and further strengthen the reputation of the University.
Other members of the new Executive Committee are Adeyemo Fathia Itunu, Vice President; Adetayo Joy Oluwatosin, Vice President ( College of Health Sciences), Oguntunwase Oluwafemi Joseph, General Secretary; Babaita Aminat Olohunwa, Welfare lSecretary; Lukman Mastutoh Olabisi, Asst. General Secretary; Muka Abdulrahman, Financial Secretary; Abdulhameed Kelechi Shittu, Sport Secretary; Oladejo Mubarakah, Welfare Secretary, (College of Health Sciences); Oluseye Emmanuel, Public Relations Officer; and Abiola Idris Olaoye, Social Secretary.
Among those who joined the Vice Chancellor to receive the new student leaders were the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Moji Taibat Bakare-Odunola; the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Olalere Adeyemi; and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye, among others.
