Egbewole bags SOSAN Fellowship

The Social Studies Educationists Association of Nigeria (SOSAN) has conferred its honorary Fellowship on the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of education in Nigeria and his support for the Association.

The conferment was the major highlight of the 42nd Annual National Conference of the Association held at the Main Auditorium of the University of Ilorin last Tuesday (August 11, 2026).

Speaking while receiving the National Executive Council and Elders of SOSAN, who visited him in his office ahead of the Conference, Prof. Egbewole commended the Association on choosing the University of Ilorin as the venue for the important national gathering.

The Vice Chancellor also commended SOSAN on its commitment to nurturing young minds and providing opportunities for emerging academics to participate in significant scholarly engagements.

While describing Social Studies as a discipline that encompasses the totality of the affairs of the society, Prof. Egbewole said the relevance of Social Studies goes beyond the classroom, as research and scholarship should contribute to addressing societal challenges and improving national development.

He also charged members of the Association to demonstrate through their activities the values they teach, particularly in the conduct of elections, noting that elections should not be treated as a do-or-die affair. He urged academics to provide positive examples for the wider society.

The Vice Chancellor, however, expressed optimism that the Conference would produce resolutions capable of further developing academic systems, processes and procedures, as well as contributing to the advancement of society.

Earlier in his remarks, the outgoing National President of SOSAN, Prof. AbdulRaheem Yusuf, appreciated the University of Ilorin for hosting the Association’s 42nd Annual National Conference, commending the University’s warm reception, support and excellent facilities.

Prof. Yusuf, who teaches at the Department of Social Sciences Education, University of Ilorin, reaffirmed the commitment of the Association to promoting Social Studies, citizenship, peace and values education as indispensable instruments for building responsible citizens and strengthening national development.

He said that Social Studies education remains critical to developing citizens who understand their responsibilities to the nation and are equipped to contribute meaningfully to peaceful coexistence and sustainable national development.

He also commended the University of Ilorin on its enduring commitment to scholarship and for creating an enabling environment where academic associations could thrive.

Prof. Yusuf disclosed that the 2026 Conference was particularly significant because it coincided with the election year of the Association.

Reflecting on his tenure as National President, Prof. Yusuf applauded the University of Ilorin and particularly the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for the encouragement and enabling environment that allowed him to serve both the University and the wider national academic community.

He noted that the modest achievements recorded by SOSAN during his tenure were made possible through the support of institutions and leaders committed to academic excellence, adding that the University of Ilorin had remained exemplary in this regard.
