Don seeks disability inclusion in Nigerian legal practice

A call has gone to stakeholders to ensure disability inclusion in Nigeria’s legal profession in order to enhance meaningful institutional practice.
This call was made last Wednesday (August 26, 2026) by a former Head of the Department of Jurisprudence and International Law, University of Ilorin, Prof. Azubike Chinwuba Onuora-Oguno, while speaking on disability law at this year’s edition of the recently concluded Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association held in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
Prof. Onuora-Oguno, who examined the relationship between the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018, State disability laws and the NBA Disability Inclusion Policy, emphasised that while legislation establishes rights and obligations, institutional policies must translate those rights into practical standards.
The don canvassed for reasonable accommodation, accessible offices and conferences, inclusive recruitment, participation, complaints mechanisms and measurable accountability.
He pinpointed the possibilities provided by sections 7 and 10 of the NBA Disability Policy, saying that practitioners who are living with one form of disability or the other should be given everything needed to feel a sense of belonging.
