For the second consecutive year, a team of researchers from the University of Ilorin has been awarded the Food Protection Trends (FPT) Peer-Reviewed Research Most-Cited Publication Award by the International Association for Food Protection, USA.

This award has been established to recognise notable research publications and reviews that contribute to the impact of FPT and the field of food protection. The award is based upon the number of citations for an FPT publication in the last two years.

With a diverse network of members and a singular focus, the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) works to ensure the safety of the global food supply.

In a post shared on its website, the IAFP listed the recipients to include Prof. Ismail Odetokun (UNILORIN), Dr Ibraheem Ghali-Mohammed (UNILORIN), Dr Nma B. Alhaji (FUTMINNA), Dr Aliyu A. Nuhu (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine), Dr Habeeb A. Oyedele (EU-FMD/FAO), Prof. Saliu A. Ameen (Dean of Veterinary Medicine, UNILORIN), and Prof. Victoria O. Adetunji (HOD, Veterinary Public Health and Preventive Medicine, UI).

The paper published in July 2020 was selected as the First Place recipient of the FPT Most Cited Research Publication Award.

Their groundbreaking research, titled “Occupational Health and Food Safety Risks in Ilorin, North-central Nigeria: A Cross-Sectional Survey of Slaughterhouse Workers”, has garnered significant recognition and citations within the field, underscoring its impact and relevance.

The award is a certificate that is presented at the editorial reception at the IAFP annual meeting to be held on Sunday, July 26, 2026 in New Orleans, LA, USA.

Reacting, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN, said that the milestone underscores the University’s research capabilities and its dedication to advancing knowledge in food safety and occupational health.

He added that this recognition from the IAFP is a testament to the research team’s hard work, expertise, and commitment to their field.

In 2025, this same research team won first place for the FPT Most Cited Research Publication Award.
