The University of Ilorin Alumni Association has approved plans for the construction of a 204-bed male hostel and a guest house, alongside a review of dues payable by graduating students.

This development is contained  in a communique signed by Dr Morakinyo Wasiu Kareem of Oyo State Chapter, Barakat Wuraola Sanni, Ogun State Chapter; Dr Dan Emo-Kiniovo Oyoboh, Delta State Chapter; and Chief Elijah Ola Olorunsuwa (National Publicity Secretary), after the Association’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the University Auditorium Basement.

The Council, according  to the communique made available to UNILORIN Bulletin, last Thursday(June 25,2026), resolved that state chapters of the Association should be restructured, revitalised and strengthened to effectively meet the present needs and aspirations of members, while the creation of additional branches under existing chapters should be encouraged in accordance with provisions of the constitution of the Association.

The Council also resolved that the University of Ilorin Branch should be strengthened further in recognition of its strategic importance as the Branch with the largest concentration of members, while all chapters and branches must strictly adhere to constitutional provisions regarding governance, operations and tenure of office.

The Council further approved an upward review of dues payable by graduating students, noting the need to reflect prevailing economic realities and rising financial demands required to sustain the Association’s programmes and activities.

In one of its major developmental decisions, the Council approved the immediate plans to proceed with the construction of the proposed  hostel project designed to complement the existing female hostel as well as the construction of a Guest House that would provide accommodation for visitors to the University and serve as an alternative source of revenue for the Association.

To facilitate the execution of the Guest House project, NEC constituted a special committee comprising representatives from Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti and Delta State chapters to mobilise financial support from members and prospective investors while also exploring Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements and other investment opportunities.

The Council also approved that alumni honoured as University of Ilorin Ambassadors during the institution’s 50th Anniversary celebration in 2025 should be approached to support the developmental aspirations of the Association.

On governance matters, NEC strongly condemned the continued impersonation of the Association’s Executive Committee by the last EXCO, telling such persons to immediately desist from actions capable of undermining the unity, integrity and progress of the Association.

The Council reiterated that the Association remains a legally constituted body governed by constitutional provisions and democratic processes, stressing that no individual has the right to hold office beyond the tenure prescribed by its constitution.

Following extensive deliberations, NEC also observed that the Association has recorded significant achievements under the current administration, particularly in the areas of infrastructural development, alumni engagement, student support initiatives and institutional strengthening.

Reports presented by various state chapters revealed varying levels of performance, membership engagement and operational challenges across chapters nationwide.

The Council particularly commended the Lagos and Kwara State chapters for exceptional commitment and performance, while observing that several other chapters require revitalisation and improved membership mobilisation efforts to strengthen operations and improve service delivery to members.

The NEC also observed that the proposed hostel and guest house projects remain viable initiatives capable of strengthening the contribution of the Association to the University while generating sustainable revenue.

The meeting further reviewed the activities of the Secretariat and acknowledged several milestones recorded by the  Administration, including continued recognition of academic excellence through awards to the overall best graduating student and outstanding graduating students across various faculties.

The Council also acknowledged the recognition of 28 distinguished alumni for outstanding professional accomplishments and contributions to their communities.

The NEC equally noted the successful organisation of the maiden and second editions of the EmployableMe programme held in Lagos and Ilorin in 2025 and 2026 respectively, an initiative designed to equip final-year undergraduate students with relevant skills and competencies needed to excel in the labour market.

The meeting also acknowledged the donation of chairs to the Banquet Hall by the University of Ilorin Engineering Class of 2001.

Among dignitaries present at the meeting were the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye; the immediate past Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Adegboyega Fawole; and the Director of the Academic Planning Unit, Prof. A. A. Adeoye, among others.
