NABS President tasks students on cultural preservation

The President of the University of Ilorin Chapter of the National Association of Baruten Students (NABS), Mr AbdulRasheed Idris Bala, has called for sustained efforts towards preserving and promoting Baruten cultural heritage
Mr Bala stated this penultimate Saturday (June 13, 2026) while speaking at the 2026 NABS Cultural Day celebration, themed “Baruten Cultural Renaissance: Honouring Heritage, Inspiring the Future,” at the UNILORIN Faculty of Law Moot Court.
He explained that the programme was organised to promote cultural awareness and foster unity among Baruten indigenes and non-indigenes.
Mr Bala opined that preserving cultural heritage remains a collective responsibility and serves as an important instrument for community development and social cohesion. He added that the Association remains committed to promoting cultural consciousness among students and would always encourage the younger generations to appreciate and uphold their cultural identity.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr Ibrahim Kperogi stressed the need to preserve indigenous cultures amid increasing globalisation and rapid social change. He urged young people to embrace their cultural heritage and contribute meaningfully to societal and national development.
The celebration underscored the importance of safeguarding indigenous traditions and values while strengthening unity among students and members of the Baruten community.
A major highlight of the event was the performance of the historic Takke (Teke) dance, which showcased the beauty and uniqueness of Baruten cultural traditions.
The event attracted academics, community leaders, students and several dignitaries from within and outside the University.
