UNILORIN built me- NECO Deputy Director
By Idris Alooma
A Deputy Director of Accounts at the National Examinations Council, NECO, Ibadan, and past President of Rotary Club of Ilorin, Mr Olayiwola Adeniyi Shogunle, has commended the University of Ilorin for shaping both his career and his family’s future. He also described the University as a pacesetter, builder of leaders, and a virtuous ivory tower with a high reputation for quality teaching.
Speaking during a recent engagement, Mr Shogunle said that the University’s culture of discipline and academic excellence set it apart from other Nigerian universities.
Mr Shogunle revealed that he obtained his MBA from the University of Ilorin in 2004, an experience he described as hugely transformative. He praised the quality of lecturers and the rigour of his thesis process, saying that the training gave him both intellectual depth and professional integrity. That experience, he noted, convinced him to make UNILORIN the destination for all his children. “Since then I decided that every child of mine will pass through UNILORIN,” he said.
That decision has already yielded results. According to him, three of his children have been students of the University. One has graduated, two are currently enrolled, and his last born is preparing to join the University in the next academic session.
For Shogunle, this multi-generational connection is a proof of UNILORIN’s consistency. He described the school as “God’s Own University” and said it has enjoyed divine favour among Nigeria’s second-generation universities.
Beyond family, the former Rotary Club President used the moment to speak to Nigerian youths. He urged students to use social media and Artificial Intelligence responsibly, warning that the future belongs to the virtuous. “Good name is more than silver and gold,” he stressed, adding that character and reputation will outlast trends and technology. He also emphasised that parenting remains the foundation of national development, stating that “Nigeria starts from homes.”
On service, Mr Shogunle defined Rotary as a selfless organisation that puts others first in every decision. He said that mindset is the best way to make lasting impact in life. From the lecture halls of UNILORIN to public service at NECO and humanitarian work through Rotary, he said the thread connecting it all is service above self and a commitment to building people.
