A graduate of the Department of Physics, University of Ilorin, Mrs Peace Chinyere Nnabugwu, has generated gas from animal waste.

Mrs Nnabugwu, who recently completed her doctorate programme at the Department, disclosed this last Monday (May 25, 2026) while demonstrating her invention to the Director of the Centre for Labouratory to Product (LABTOP), University of Ilorin, Prof. Muhammad Jimoh Saka, and the Head of the Department, Dr Taofeeq Olanrewaju Lawal, at the premises of the Department.

She explained that the gas was produced from animal dumps collected from Oke-Ose in Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Mrs Nnabugwu explained that the animal waste was treated for five days using integrated thermodynamic application to ensure maximum yield.

She said that the gas could be used to generate power for both domestic and industrial purposes, pointing out that instead of wasting human and animal wastes they can be converted into biogas for the benefit of human beings.

Speaking on the cost of her invention, Mrs Nnabugwu, who is also the Country Director of the Science Ambassadors Foundation, said that the preparation of  the biogas costs between ₦500,000 and ₦750,000.

While thanking the Department and specifically her supervisors, Prof. C. O. Akoshile and Prof. A. B. Alabi, Mrs Nnabugwu said that the invention would address energy poverty.

She also said that it would greatly assist in waste management as it is also environmental friendly.

Mrs Nnabugwu added that the invention would also serve as a source of employment as it would also enhance efforts targeted at generating clean energy.

On what motivated her to embark on the research, Mrs Nnabugwu said she did because of the growing quest of converting waste to wealth.

Mrs Nnabugwu encouraged young scientists and researchers to always ensure that they tailor their minds and energy towards finding solutions to societal problems.

Also at the event were Mrs Sade Shittu, a Chief Technologist at the Department of Physics and Dr Omolayo Omorinoye, a Deputy Director at the LABTOP.
