UNILORIN reaffirms commitment to Pharmacy education

The Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has reaffirmed the commitment of the University Administration to sustaining quality assurance, academic innovation, and professional excellence in pharmaceutical education, assuring that the institution would continue to provide the needed support for the advancement of the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D) programme.

Prof. Egbewole gave this assurance through the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Olalere Adeyemi, at the presentation of the exit report of the accreditation exercise conducted by the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria penultimate Friday (May 23, 2026) at the Vice Chancellor’s Committee Room

The Vice Chancellor expressed appreciation to the accreditation team for what he described as a thorough, objective, and professional exercise aimed at strengthening pharmacy education in the country.

The legal luminary assured the team that the University would carefully study the observations and recommendations contained in the report with a view to improving on areas requiring further attention. He added that the institution remained committed to maintaining standards that would continue to place the University among leading pharmacy training institutions in Nigeria.

Prof. Egbewole also commended members of staff of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for their dedication and sacrifices towards the successful hosting of the accreditation exercise. He urged them not to relent in advancing teaching, research, and community service in line with the mandate of the University.

In his remarks, the Registrar of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, Pharm. Ibrahim Babashehu Ahmed, said the Council remained committed to ensuring that pharmacy training institutions across the country complied with approved standards and global best practices necessary for producing competent healthcare professionals.

The Registrar explained that accreditation exercises were designed not only to assess facilities and manpower but also to encourage institutions to continually improve on quality delivery, research output, and professional ethics in the training of pharmacists. He noted that the Council would continue to partner with universities to strengthen pharmaceutical education and healthcare services in Nigeria.

He commended the management of the University and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for the level of organisation and cooperation extended to the accreditation team throughout the exercise, noting that  the conducive learning environment and commitment demonstrated by staff and students reflected the institution’s determination to sustain excellence.

The Registrar further encouraged the University to sustain investment in modern laboratory facilities, information resources, and clinical training exposure in order to meet evolving global trends in pharmacy practice and pharmaceutical research.

In his presentation of the exit report, the leader of the accreditation team, Prof. Umar Usman Pateh, commended the management of the University for its sustained commitment to academic excellence and investment in pharmaceutical education. He noted that the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences had demonstrated appreciable growth in infrastructure, staffing, research output, and professional training.

Prof. Pateh explained that the accreditation exercise was aimed at assessing compliance with the standards and guidelines of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria for the training of pharmacists in Nigeria.

He noted that the panel carefully evaluated academic content, laboratory facilities, library resources, staffing, clinical exposure, and students’ welfare before arriving at its observations.

The team lead acknowledged the cordial relationship existing among members of staff, students, and the University Administration, describing the atmosphere during the visit as conducive and professional, adding that the cooperation received from the management and staff of the Faculty greatly assisted the team in carrying out its assignment successfully.

Prof. Pateh advised the University to sustain its tempo of development by paying continuous attention to emerging areas in pharmaceutical training, especially in modern laboratory technology, research support, and expansion of learning facilities to meet increasing students’ population and evolving professional demands.

He expressed confidence that the University possessed the capacity and institutional culture necessary to continue producing highly skilled pharmacy graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to the healthcare sector and national development.
