The immediate past Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services) of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole, has been described as ‘‘someone who is passionate about the University, a proud alumnus, loyal to the Administration, an all-round fantastic human being, a man with a unique way of relieving tension, jovial yet very serious, a great mentor and a passionate leader.’’
This formed the consensus of opinion of members of the University Governing Council when they gathered last Tuesday (March 31, 2026) at the Council Chamber for a send-off ceremony held in honour of Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole, who just completed his tenure as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services). He had previously served as DVC (Research, Technology and Innovation).
Prof. Fawole was accompanied to the event by his wife, who is a former Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Oluyemisi Bolajoko Fawole; and his brother, Prof. Olufemi Adeniyi Fawole, who teaches at the Department of Sociology.
Leading the tributes, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Surveyor Abiodun Jacob Aluko, described Prof. Fawole as a gentleman whose calm and cheerful dispositions never diminished his seriousness of purpose.
Surveyor Aluko, who is also a former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, noted that despite his ever-smiling nature, Prof. Fawole approached assignments with diligence and intellectual depth.
“One thing I noticed about him is that he is gentlemanly; you can never see him frown. He is always smiling, yet he takes his responsibilities seriously. Whenever he presents reports before the Council, you will notice a very intelligent man who knows exactly what he is doing,” Surv. Aluko said.
The Council Chairman added that Prof. Fawole’s exit from office should not be seen as the end of his service to the University, saying that his experience and contributions would still be required in different capacities.
Also speaking, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, described the former Deputy Vice Chancellor as a loyal friend and committed compatriot who worked tirelessly in support of the Administration, even under difficult circumstances.
“I want to appreciate you as a loyal friend. You have been a committed compatriot. You supported the Administration and worked assiduously even in challenging situations. You never shy away from responsibility,” the Vice Chancellor said.
Prof. Egbewole said that Prof. Fawole remains an integral part of the University system, noting that his transition out of office does not translate to a departure from service. He further appreciated his strong network, generosity, and readiness to support institutional development at all times.
The Vice Chancellor cited instances of Prof. Fawole’s contributions, including facilitating major donations and sponsorships for University projects and international academic engagements, which have significantly enhanced the institution’s growth and global visibility.
Responding, Prof. Fawole appreciated the accolades poured on him, noting that he was deeply humbled by the remarks made about him. He added that his approach to life and service has always been rooted in simplicity, fairness, and respect for all, regardless of background.
While reflecting on the lessons learned throughout his career, he described life as a continuous learning process shaped by interactions with others. According to him, every experience contributes to personal growth, teaching resilience, caution, and the importance of maintaining harmonious relationships.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of a formal Letter of Commendation to Prof. Fawole in recognition of his outstanding services to the University.
In the commendation letter presented on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, Management, staff, students, and the entire University community, signed and read by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr Mansur Adeleke Alfanla, the University applauded Prof. Fawole’s exemplary service and invaluable contributions during his tenure in two critical leadership roles, first as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), and subsequently as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services).
The Council noted that between February 24, 2024 and January 23, 2025, and from January 23, 2025 to February 23, 2026, Prof. Fawole demonstrated exceptional commitment to excellence, institutional advancement, and administrative professionalism. It stated that his tenure was marked by a collaborative leadership style and a strong sense of selfless service that significantly strengthened the University’s governance structures.
According to the letter, the University remains grateful for Prof. Fawole’s dedication and the strategic roles he played in ensuring stability and progress during his tenure. It added that his efforts have continued to position the institution on a stronger footing for future growth and development.
While wishing him continued success in his future endeavours, the Council expressed optimism that Prof. Fawole would remain a valuable partner in the ongoing advancement of the University, noting that his experience and insight would always be welcomed within the academic community.
