The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has disclosed that the University has, despite the challenge of inadequate funding for public universities, continued to think “outside the box and without the box” to pursue alternatives that support sustainable growth.
Prof. Egbewole stated this penultimate Friday (November 14, 2025) while featuring on the ”Countdown to Unilorin @ 50”, a personality interview programme of UNILORIN 89.3 FM.
The Vice Chancellor explained that achieving high-quality manpower training, ensuring accreditable academic programmes, and articulating a clear five-year development direction remain central to the University’s vision.
He highlighted the University’s fully automated admissions-to-graduation processes and improved communication channels that allow memos to be addressed from any location, and the ongoing expansion of the Faculty of Health Sciences as evidence of the institution’s progressive reforms.
Prof. Egbewole commended the alumni body and other philanthropists for their unwavering support as he acknowledged the contributions and full funding of a Centre for Marine and Blue Economy by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola and many other contributions, which includes the upgrading of facilities.
He assured students that no decision affecting them would ever be made without due consultation with them.
He further emphasised that UNILORIN maintains one of the most affordable fee structures in the country, noting that over 8,000 newly admitted students have already been onboarded into NELFUND. He added that the U-Inspire programme has also equipped hundreds of students with essential skills.
According to the Vice Chancellor, the University cannot operate as an island but must continue to innovate, collaborate, and build on its achievements to attain global relevance.
Prof. Egbewole reiterated that if students are properly trained, they will be well positioned to contribute to Nigeria’s growth. He referenced the counsel of former Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, during the 40th Convocation, that graduates must strive to solve societal problems as they progress in their careers and also shun all dubious ways of making quick money.
