The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has called on parents to deliberately communicate with their children in Yoruba and other indigenous languages, especially at home, to preserve and promote Nigeria’s rich linguistic heritage.
Prof. Egbewole made the appeal last Tuesday (October 7, 2025) when he received members of the National Executive Committee of the Yoruba Studies Association of Nigeria (YSAN), who paid him a courtesy visit ahead of their 2025 Annual Conference.
Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (ManagementServices), Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole, the Vice Chancellor explained that language is a vital component of cultural identity and a major vehicle for transmitting values from one generation to another.
He, therefore, urged YSAN to step up their advocacy to encourage parents to ensure that their children understand and appreciate their mother tongues as a way of safeguarding national culture.
Speaking earlier, the President of YSAN, Prof. Temitope Olumuyiwa, expressed appreciation to the management of the University for accepting to host the Association’s 2025 Annual Conference.
Prof. Olumuyiwa also commended the University’s support for Yoruba Studies in the institution, noting that such backing has strengthened its reputation as a leading centre for the study and promotion of the Yoruba language.
Earlier, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Ibrahim Jawondo, lauded the University administration for its consistent encouragement and support, which he said have greatly contributed to the successful hosting of academic and cultural events within the Faculty.
