. . . as NBC officials visit FM station
By Abubakar Imam
The Director of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin, Mr Kunle Akogun, has described the institution as a law-abiding citadel of learning, saying, “and this virtue has percolated all its agencies such that none of them has ever been found breaking any rule and regulation governing public conduct.”
Mr Akogun made this assertion last Monday (August 11, 2025) while receiving the new Head of the Kwara State Office of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mr Adedayo Makinde, who paid a familiarisation visit to UNILORIN 89.3 FM.
The Director said that the University has a reputation of being a consistent law-keeper, saying that the University does not take delight in the violation of any rule whatsoever.
Mr Akogun said, “We don’t break law, we frown at law-breaking that is why peace and fraternity radiate among the staff and students of the University and between the University and members of the public.”
The consummate journalist and astute public relations practitioner said that the law-abiding disposition of the University has been reflecting on the quality of services rendered by the radio station, as it has always complied with all laid-down rules in the National Broadcasting Code guiding broadcasting in the country, saying that the UNILORIN FM has never been sanctioned.
The Director said that the positive rating of UNILORIN FM can also not be divorced from the fact that staff of the radio station are thoroughbred professionals who are not only at home with the broadcasting code but are also doing their best towards ensuring that the station remains on top.
Mr Akogun commended the NBC for the continuous cooperation the campus radio station has been enjoying from the regulatory body since its establishment on August 13, 2009.
Also speaking, the General Manager of the Station, Mr Idris Akintola Ibrahim (Alooma), said that the station is the first to operate 24-hour transmission in Kwara State.
The ace broadcaster commended the NBC on its contributions to the peace and progress of the nation, saying that the effects of the regulatory roles of the NBC can never be over-emphasised.
He assured the NBC that the station would remain professional in its services and would not run afoul of the rules.
Mr Alooma drew the attention of the State Officer to some technical challenges being faced by the station particularly the occasional jamming of its frequency by a sister station based in Oyo State.
Speaking earlier, the new State Officer, Mr Makinde, commended the UNILORIN FM on the rate of professionalism devoted to its services.
Mr Makinde, who was accompanied by a former Ag. State Officer of the NBC, Mrs Rosemary Obaje, reminded the management and staff of the station of the need to continue to adhere strictly to the provisions of the Broadcast Code.
He added that he had been inundated with information on the righteousness of the station over the years as he urged the station to keep the flag flying.
Mr Makinde, who also answered some questions on a live programme of the radio station, promised that the NBC would continue to discharge its functions with fairness and professionalism.
He explained that the NBC was not created to witch-hunt but to ensure that sanity prevails at all times among broadcast stations in the country in a way that the citizens will be well informed, educated and entertained for the progress of the country.
The Director and the General Manager were joined in receiving the NBC State Officer by the Deputy Editor of UNILORIN Bulletin, Mr Abubakar Imam; the Head of News, Research and Current Affairs, UNILORIN FM, Mrs Haolat Temitope Folorunsho, and the Head of Marketing of the Station, Mrs Mary Kolawole.
