The Ag.Director of the Centre for Cyber Security and Sustainable Development, University of Ilorin, Dr Lukman Abiodun Olawoyin, has advised prospective students to be security conscious as they prepare for the University’s Post-UTME.
Dr Olawoyin gave this advice last Tuesday (August 12, 2025) while speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin in his office.
The don expressed concern about Nigeria’s state of insecurity and emphasised the need for all Nigerians to be concerned and contribute their quotas to improving the situation.
Dr Olawoyin advised students coming for the Post-UTME screening to
avoid night traveling and boarding of vehicles at undesignated places.
He also implored them to be conscious of their environment at all times as he urged them to travel in groups rather than individually.
Dr Olawoyin also encouraged them to snap and send the vehicle’s number plate to loved ones and let the drivers to be aware while sending the pictures.
Speaking on the activities of the Centre, the Ag. Director noted that the Centre focuses on securing the University’s cyberspace, helping it to monitor the keeping of sensitive and non-sensitive data, and enlightening members of the University community on staying secure.
Dr Olawoyin, who is a former Head of the Department of Telecommunication Science, recommended that there should be punishment for those caught engaging in cybercrimes.
He highlighted the need to encourage and equip security personnel with modern equipment to combat bandits.
The don encouraged students of the University to focus on profitable endeavors they’re proud of and avoid internet fraud
He advised parents and guardians to engage with their wards and motivate them to always behave well and look beyond just obtaining certificates.
