The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has assured the newly admitted students of the Centre for Open and Distance Learning (CODL) of coming to the right place for their academic pursuits.

The Vice Chancellor stated this last Thursday (February 20, 2025), while speaking at the 2nd Convocation Ceremony of the Centre, held at its premises, located at the University Mini Campus.

Prof. Egbewole, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Taibat M. Bakare-Odunola, noted that the decision of the students to embrace open and distance learning is a testament to their resilience, ambition, and commitment to personal and professional growth. He said, “This shows that indeed, you are on the right track.”

The Vice Chancellor said, “Today marks the beginning of an academic journey that will shape your future, equip you with knowledge, and open doors to limitless opportunities.”

Prof. Egbewole said that education is the foundation of progress, adding that  “through this flexible and innovative learning model, you have chosen a path that accommodates your diverse needs while ensuring quality education.”

He explained that the world is evolving, and technology continues to redefine how knowledge is acquired and applied.

The Vice Chancellor urged the students to take their educational journey seriously as the difference between them and those in the main campus is online lessons.

In his remarks, the Registrar of the University, Mr Mansur Adeleke Alfanla, also urged the students to seek help when need be and be security conscious.

He maintained that security is a collective responsibility.

Mr Alfanla noted that students now have the privilege of learning at their own pace while balancing other personal and professional responsibilities.

He said it is a golden opportunity that, if utilised well, will empower students to achieve excellence in their chosen fields.

According to the Registrar,  “By choosing open and distance learning, you are positioning yourselves at the forefront of academic transformation.”

A total of 94 students were matriculated at the event.

Highlights of the programme included the administration of the Matriculation Oath on the students.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Deputy Vice Chancellor (RTI), Prof. Muhtar Etudaiye; the University Bursar, Mr Lawal Abiodun; the University Librarian, Prof. Kamaldeen Omopupa; and the Director of CODL, Prof. Modinah AbdulRaheem.
