UNILORIN takes sanitation awareness campaign to Jalala community

Master students of Public Health Education of the University of Ilorin on Saturday, February 8, 2025, hosted a Sanitation Awareness campaign in Jalala Community.

                The event, which drew participants from within and outsides the community, is aimed at promoting cleanliness, hygiene, and proper waste management to prevent the spread of diseases.

The Sanitation Awareness Programme, which was held at the Jalala Primary Health Care Centre, orientated the participants, who were given the opportunity to answer some questions, while also accessing free High Blood Pressure (HBP) checks, among other services.

At the end of the programme, the organisers presented cash gifts to participants who were able to answer questions correctly. The participants were also urged to extend the already imbibed sanitation awareness to their neighbours who could not attend.

Speaking at the event, the Head of the Department of Health Promotion and Environmental Health Education, Faculty of Education, Prof. Shuaib Olanrewaju Oniyangi, commended the residents of Jalala community for their participation and enthusiasm. He emphasised the importance of cleanliness and cultivating the habit of good hygiene and proper waste management.

In his remarks, the Postgraduate Coordinator of the Department, Dr. Ibrahim Ologele, said that the purpose of the sanitation awareness is to increase the number of communities that will be in healthy condition. He said that, since prevention is better than cure, the Department of Health Promotion decided to arrange the awareness programme for Jalala, Balogun, and some other contiguous communities.

Dr Ologele said, “We are bringing awareness on how these communities can protect themselves against some diseases that can easily affect them and their family members especially on poor personal hygiene and poor environmental sanitation.”

                The Magaji of Jalala, who was represented by Alhaji Saadu Akanbi, thanked the organisers for choosing the community as the venue of such an important event. He prayed for both the students and lecturers of the Department and the University Management.

The event was attended by the Chief Imam of Jalala, Alhaji Abdulkarim Abdulsalam; the Chairman Environmental Sanitation in Balogun community, Alhaji Onoara, and the Officer in charge of Jalala Primary Health Care Centre, Alhaja Abdulrasaq Aisha Remilekun.
